A woman was left upset after her friends wanted her to foot the full dinner bill, given that she was the only one with a job.
In a post on Reddit’s “Am I A——” forum, the 20-year-old woman wrote that she and three of her high school friends “got together for dinner after not seeing each other for a while.”
Noting that the date wasn’t her idea, “but I was invited and very excited because it’s been a year since the four of us have been together,” the Redditor stated that things took a turn for the worse when their bill arrived on their desk .
“We never talked about splitting the check and our waiter left it in the aisle and everyone kept making comments about being in school/out of work, insinuating that I should pay,” the woman wrote, noting that “two of them are in college with full-time work and study jobs, and the other works full-time but is currently between jobs.”
“I work full time – I started working as a night assistant in June,” she continued. “I was a little taken aback because no one said I would cover the bill in full (~$90 without tip).”

Thinking the fair solution would be for her to “pay for my meal and cover the tip,” the woman wrote, “but I wanted them to pay me the price of what they ordered.”
However, her friends did not like the idea, the woman explained. “They seemed offended and kind of looked at me sideways, but reluctantly agreed,” she wrote. They kept commenting that I had a ‘big woman’s job’, that I could have paid the whole bill and been fine, and that I was being selfish for asking for my money back.
The Redditor also said she told her friends “it was rude of them to expect me to pay without suggesting it first and I don’t think I’m being selfish.”
“This happened a few weeks ago and they keep joking/complaining in our group chat about what happened,” she added. “And I know one of them is actually mad at me for what happened.”

In the comments section of the post, many users agreed with the woman, stating that she is not wrong.
“These people are not your friends. I would withdraw from this group and find people who could afford the plans they made with me instead of seeing me as a substitute for mom and dad paying for dinner for me,” one user wrote.
Another added: “If they didn’t have money, they could have suggested going out to visit someone. What they’re doing is immature and rude.”
Another commenter, meanwhile, asked the original poster about her friendships with other girls, “because honestly it sounds like they just invited you to pay for dinner which is really gross.”
In response, the woman replied, “The four of us were best friends in high school and freshman year of college, but we drifted a little because we each had our own paths.”
