Woman’s Husband ‘Drowned’ Terrarium That She Built with Her Late Mom — But Was the Plant Murder Malicious?

  • A Reddit user revealed that her husband killed the plants in her terrarium while she was on a road trip
  • The woman ended up canceling their vacation so she could try to save the terrarium she built with her late mom
  • Her husband got angry because he didn’t think it was a big deal and started sleeping in a separate room
  • The story sparked a debate on Reddit about whether it was an accident or whether her husband was intentionally malicious

A woman is seeking safety after she claims her husband destroyed her treasured terrarium she built with her late mother 15 years ago.

In a post shared on Reddit, “Am I the A–hole,” user Tiny-Pen-2289, 29, talks about an incident between her and her husband, 33, that happened after she traveled across the country to investigate “an amazing deal for work” and visit his sister for eight days.

The original poster (OP) reveals that “the trouble started” when she returned from a trip with a few days off before the couple were to celebrate their anniversary with a luxury train ride.

“I have a very large indoor bioactive terrarium that I made with my mother 15 years ago,” she continues. “That’s one of my favorite things about her before she died. This terrarium is my pride and joy, and it’s been with me everywhere since we planted it.”

She adds that her terrarium has always been “healthy and beautiful” and that she has only opened it four times since she made it to do some maintenance and water it. Down in the thread, she explains that it’s a “self-sustaining ecosystem” that creates its own moisture and requires very little care.

“My husband knows all this, and that’s why I don’t understand why he decided to get involved in it in my absence. I didn’t notice that night when I got home because I was exhausted, but the next morning I went to check on the terrarium and found it in terrible shape. The roots were rotting, and the plants were dying and moldy.”

After questioning her husband, she discovered that he had “poured several cups of water into the container and resealed it.” The couple immediately got into a heated argument in which her husband told her, “it’s just a plant” and “all you’re doing is looking at him anyway.”

“He called me ungrateful and overly dramatic, and [said] that I should appreciate that his intention was to help me,” she shares. He also said he didn’t ask her before watering the plants because he “didn’t want to get in my way.” The woman ended up canceling their train escape because she “wanted to try to save the plants, and that would take time.”

The cancellation upset her husband so much that he “now sleeps in a separate room and refuses to talk to me because, according to him, I am petty and trying to destroy our marriage.”

While her friends claim it was an accident and her husband was just trying to be considerate, other Reddit users think the woman is “not an a-hole” (NTA).

“If you’ve only opened it a few times, it knows it doesn’t get watered that often,” one user commented, with another agreeing, “it’s maliciously killed something you love.”

Another person went further, writing: “NTA. He killed your plants because he envies how much they mean to you. I would consider canceling not just the anniversary trip.”

Others pointed out that even if his intentions to water the plants were pure, his angry response to his wife’s reaction was “selfish.”

However, there were a few who thought her husband was just ignorant and not malicious.

“I do not know; this is one of those weird malice vs. ignorance situations where I’m not sure we can pass that judgment,” the user commented. “He’s certainly trying to avoid responsibility here, but I don’t see any motive for malice.
