Women's Brains Age Better Than Men's. Scientists Just Discovered the Reason Why

The new study from the University of California San Francisco indicates that the female brain could be more suitable for aging than male – and all thanks to the “quiet” chromosome.

Females have two x chromosomes, and for a long time scientists believed that the second x chromosome – called “sleeping” or “quiet” chromosome – is basically meaningless.

The new UCSF study, however, revealed that aging was actually “woke up” by the second X chromosome in 20-month genetically modified female mice, which are equivalent to a 65-year-old man. This then expressed genes that helped strengthen brain connections and increase cognition.

“In a typical aging, women have a brain that looks younger, with less cognitive deficits compared to men,” said Dena Dubal, MD

“These results show that silent X in women is actually reacting in the late life, probably helping to slow down the cognitive fall.”

Work, which appears in the March 5 edition Progress of scienceHe shares that the other “quiet” chromosome expressed about 20 genes, most of which played a role in helping brain development.

“The aging has woke up to sleep x,” Dubal said.

Researchers believe that this could be an explanation that the human female brain responds to aging.

“We immediately thought it could explain that women’s brains remain resistant in typical aging, because men would not have an additional X,” said Margaret Gadek, a graduate student of a combined MD UCSF MD, a doctoral program of a medical scientist and the first author of Labor.

With this discovery, scientists believe that they can now explore mental and cognitiveness of aging.

“Kognition is one of our biggest biomedical problems, but things are variable in the brain of aging, and the X chromosome can obviously teach us what is possible,” Dubal said, noting that they will deal with “interventions” that could “enhance” genes to help brain function during aging.
