Arrested during padayatra called ‘Praja Prasthanam’
On November 28, 2022, during a march called ‘Praja Prasthanam’, YS Sharmila and her party workers were allegedly attacked by a group of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) (formerly Telangana Rashtra Samithi TRS) workers in Chennaraopet in Warangal district, who were protesting against her offensive remarks against BRS party leader Peddi Sudarshan Reddy. During the march on November 27, 2022, Sharmila accused Peddi Sudarshan Reddy of illegally acquiring land and extorting money by intimidating common people and contractors. YSR Telangana Party workers accused BSR party workers of attacking the caravan where Sharmila was resting and breaking the glass of a car belonging to the YSR Telangana Party. Following the incident, the police cancelled the permission to hold the march. Speaking to reporters, Sharmila expressed her anger over the cancellation of permission to go ahead with the Padayatra and said,
For the past 223 days, I, along with party leaders and representatives, have been holding peaceful marches to highlight the plight of people from all sections of Telangana. Our growing popularity has alarmed Chief Minister KCR and his party members who want to stop me at all costs.”
In response to the attack on her convoy, on November 29, 2022, Sharmila along with her party members went to the residence of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to protest against him and his party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). On the way to the Chief Minister’s residence, she was stopped by the police but she locked herself in the car. As Sharmila refused to get out of the car, the police had to call a crane to tow her car and took her to the SR Nagar police station where she was arrested along with six other party members. A case was registered against her at the Panjagutta police station under sections 353 (assault or violence to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 333 (intentionally causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 327 (intentionally causing hurt to extort money or to force to do unlawful act) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). She was released on bail a few hours later.
