Although green butterflies do exist, such as the common green birdwing found in Southeast Asia and Australia, most people probably think of the monarch butterfly when they imagine the tiny winged creature.

That’s because the Monarch butterfly is one of the most recognizable and best-studied butterflies in the world, according to National Geographic.

You might think of its orange wings laced with black lines and edged with white dots, but there’s more to these insects than vibrant colors.

The Monarch butterfly can be found in the United States, Canada and Mexico, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Its scientific name is Danaus plexippus, which means sleep transformation in Greek.

The name alludes to the butterflies’ ability to hibernate and metamorphose.
