Nick Powell, from the AA Patrol of the Year, said: “The most common causes of breakdowns dealt with by the AA tend to be dead batteries, lost keys, damaged tyres, overheated engines and blocked diesel particulate filters – many of which are problems drivers can avoid with proper maintenance.

“Seasonally, winter sees more breakdowns, with dead batteries and tire issues causing the most problems, so it’s really important to stay alert as we head into the colder months.

“To avoid draining the batteries, drivers should turn everything off every time they leave the car and use battery conditioner overnight every two weeks.

“To prevent tire damage, drivers should regularly check the tread depth, pressure and condition of their tires.

“If possible, avoid driving over potholes.

“To prevent overheating, the best thing drivers can do is make sure their engine coolant is topped up to the correct level.

“When it comes to things like lost keys, you’ll need help getting them back.

“It’s a good idea to keep a spare key at home, but of little use if you’re away.

“You’ll either need to go to an authorized dealer or call someone qualified to help you get back. It’s also important to make sure you’re fully covered by breakdown cover at all times to give you peace of mind while you’re on the road.”

If you spotted the hazards in less than 69 seconds, you beat the average time required to complete the challenge.
