early life

Deenanath Mangeshkar’s family originated from Portuguese India (now Goa), and he was born into a Mangesh family. Dinanath’s father was a Kahad Brahmin, the priest of the famous Goa Mangesh temple. However, his mother was born in a Devadasi community in Goa. She was asked to sing and dance at religious, cultural and festive ceremonies organized by the Mangesh temple and had musical talent. She was the mistress of Dinanas’ father. The famous Gomantak Maratha Samaj of Goa was later formed by the Devadasi community. His village is called Mangeshi and is located in Goa. Dinanath’s father used the surname “Hardika” because his ancestors belonged to a family of priests who used to perform the ritual bathing of Lord Shiva Linga at the Mangesh temple. This ritual is called “Abhishekam”. Harish Bhimani mentioned this in his book “In Search of Lata Mangeshkar” published in 1995. His ancestors and family are considered the “Abhishekis” of Goa. However, Dinanas preferred music and singing, as his mother was a great singer and dancer. Later, in his teenage years, Dinanath changed his surname from Abhisheki to Mangeshkar, which means the lingam of Lord Shiva. At the Mangeshi temple in Goa, the Abhishekhi community worships the Linga of Lord Shiva.
