Criticize OTT platforms
According to Zerifah, she started her own production company to enhance Assamese cinema and produce quality productions. Despite her significant contribution to Indian cinema, Zerifah feels that her work and that of other Assamese or Northeastern actors and directors are not welcomed by OTT platforms, nor are they getting the attention they need in the mainstream industry. She said in an interview,
At international film festivals, Assamese films are celebrated for their work with Sanjay Hazarika, late Bidyut Chakraborty and Jahnu Barua ), who bring film awards to India every year. Director Rajat Kamal has won several awards. Jahnu Barua won nineteen National Film Awards! But on the business side, we have not been welcomed by OTT platforms. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar and Zee5 all have a huge collection of Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati and Punjabi movies. But not an Assamese film. Since 2011, there have been almost 30 to 40 new films in Assam, all of which are good films that have done well at home and abroad. But the attitude of the people themselves is not welcoming. We Assamese and Northeasterners are shy and don’t know how to approach the market or sell our products. Lack of marketing skills. We do not expose ourselves or expose ourselves. Many filmmakers are happy that their films are accepted into some film festivals, but they are not interested in making their money back. So the problem lies within us as individuals. ”
