You may have noticed that today’s Google Doodle is a 35mm camera photo honoring Polish photographer Zofia Nasierowska, who would have celebrated her 85th birthday today. Her father encouraged her interest in art from an early age. She is known for the portraits of her of prominent Polish personalities.
Zofia, who is considered one of the most important Polish photographers of her generation, started using a camera when she was just seven years old. Just four years after starting photography classes, she organized her own exhibition. Her father, Eugeniusz Nasierowski, was also a famous photographer.
Although the young photographer’s passion for photography began close to home, she developed it further at the Leon Schiller National Film School in Lód, Poland, where she photographed many of her classmates.
One of the most famous images of Nasierowska is Barbara Brylska, a Polish actress who starred in Pharaoh and Irony of Fate, as well as Jan Kobuszewski, a Polish actor and comedian, and Kalina Jdrusik, a Polish singer and actress.
For one of his black-and-white self-portraits, he used a Praktisix medium format camera, which seems to have inspired a Google Doodle, showing an image of Nasierowska in the viewfinder.
Although the photographer passed away in 2011 after a battle with a brain disease, her 35-year career as a photographer ended only after she was diagnosed with an eye problem. She persisted in working with photographers and influencing the younger generation to the point that a library in Elk, Poland was named after her.
Although she may not be as well known as other photographers of her generation, such as Cindy Sherman, Annie Leibovitz or Robert Mapplethorpe, she is still considered one of the greatest Polish photographers of all time due to her movie star photography.
