13-Year-Old Boy Found Dead After Going Missing in N.Y.C.’s East River

The body of a 13-year-old boy who went missing in New York’s East River last week has been found, PEOPLE can confirm.

The family’s attorney, Sanford Rubenstein, told PEOPLE that the teenager’s body — identified by family members as Kavion Brown — was located Friday, and his loved ones are now planning funeral arrangements.

The cabin went missing after entering the water near East River Park in Manhattan’s East Village shortly after 4 p.m. local time on Oct. 20, police previously told PEOPLE. His family and authorities said they believed he dared to enter.

A New York Police Department spokesman said earlier New York Post that Kavion said, “See what I can do,” to his friends when he went into the river. He was then swept away by the current, police told the newspaper.

Authorities have been searching the water since he went missing.

Kavion, who loved basketball, dancing and art, had asked to go to a soccer game at the park the day he disappeared, according to ABC affiliate WABC-TV.

His mom agreed because she was told he was going with his basketball team and their coach, according to the outlet.

A GoFundMe set up for Kavion said the teenager was “full of spirit” and “touched so much”.

“Kavion’s smile lit up the room and he offered it to us so freely,” read a message on the fundraising page. “Kavion loved to be active and took his responsibilities, including being a loving big brother, very seriously.”

“Thank you for loving Kavion and the Godfrey family. Let’s cover them with love and support and continue to spread Kavion’s light forever,” the message continued.

As of Saturday morning, over $9,000 had been raised.
