9-1-1: Lone Star to End with Season 5 After Rob Lowe Called It the 'End of An Era'

5th season 9-1-1: Lone Star will be his last.

On Thursday, September 5th, FOX announced that the Rob Lowe-hosted procedural will end after the upcoming fifth season, which is set to premiere on September 23rd.

In a statement, Michael Thorn, president of the FOX television network, said the final season will give the series “the high-stakes sendoff it deserves, complete with breathless rescues, insurmountable odds and personal struggles to match, thanks to our incomparable, all-star cast led by Rob Lowe and Gina Torres.”

He also thanked the show’s creators, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, calling them “one of the greatest creative teams in all of television” as he credited them with “creating one of the most action-packed dramas.”

Speculation that the 5th season of the series 9-1-1 spinoff would be his last to begin circulating this spring, and the exit of series regular Sierra McClain only added fuel to the fire.

In August, Lowe, 60, who hosts the series and Austin’s fledgling Fire Department 126 as Owen Strand, said Diversity that the cast “all went into [season 5]

“It seems like it’s probably the end of an era of a certain kind,” he continued. “Well, I don’t feel that way. That is the end of an era of a certain type of show that we once had the opportunity to do, and I think they’re great.”

Lowe said the upcoming 12-episode season consists of “mini-movies every week,” adding, “I think we’ve done a really good job. The stories we’ve been able to tell on a weekly basis in terms of scope and scale — that’s probably what which I am most proud of.”

The final season will begin with a multi-episode storyline involving a “catastrophic train derailment” that “endangers several lives,” including some of the 126 team led by Captain Strand and Tommy Vega (Torres).

Lowe told PEOPLE that the opening plot is a “crazy three-part special” that requires an incredible set. “I’ve been taking pictures on the set, videos on the set and sending it to everyone I know, but you just can’t believe this isn’t a $200 million movie — it looks like it.”

In addition to an action-packed start, season 5 shows Owen still dealing with the death of his half-brother at the end of season 4, while Tommy discovers that the “road to happiness” in her relationship is “full of obstacles” and TK (Ronen Rubenstein) and Carlos’ marriage tested when Carlos (Rafael L. Silva) becomes obsessed with solving his father’s murder.

“As Judd (Jim Parrack) resigns from 126 to care for his recently disabled son Wyatt (Jackson Pace), Owen must find a new lieutenant to replace Judd and faces a difficult decision when both Marjan (Natacha Karam) and Paul (Brian Michael Smith) to apply for a promotion,” according to the official synopsis.
