The driver arrested is a 55-year-old man from Cape Town. A Western Cape Police Department spokesman named Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the driver had been charged and would appear before Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court. The spokesperson also added that the victims included two people, ages 6 and 15, who were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Wesley Twigg said: “Mitchells Plain Police have registered a homicide case for investigation following a fatal crash that claimed the lives of five children on AZ Berman Drive. Police, traffic, fire and rescue services, metro police and ambulance are currently on the ground.” He also claimed that the students who died were between the ages of 7 and 13. An ambulance reportedly arrived within minutes after the accident. Medics found the bakkie upright in the middle of the road. The white bakkie overturned several times.
