Metohija police and emergency teams rushed to the scene of the stabbing around 11:40 p.m.
But tragically, despite their best efforts, Harry died from his injuries shortly before midnight.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.
He remains in custody at a police station in north London.
Chief Inspector Geoff Grogan, who is leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts and condolences are with Harry’s family and friends at this difficult time. He was a young man with the rest of his life ahead of him.
“His family are understandably devastated and specially trained officers are supporting them as they come to terms with their loss.
“A dedicated team of detectives is working hard to determine the events that led to such a senseless act of violence.
“We are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and conducting a forensic examination of the scene.
“We know that Harry was with a group of friends near the Lookout on Primrose Hill where they gathered to celebrate the New Year.
“We believe that here Harry is embroiled in an altercation with devastating consequences.
“Primrose Hill was very busy at the time and I believe there are people who witnessed the incident who have not yet spoken to the police.
“It is important that we build a clear picture of the moments leading up to and immediately after Harry’s murder and I need anyone with information about the altercation or attack to contact us immediately.”
On the Metropolitan Police’s website, appealing for information, police wrote: “Homicide detectives are investigating the murder of Harry PITMAN at the top of Primrose Hill, London NW3.
“Harry was attacked at around 11.30pm on Sunday 31 December 2023.
“Officers from the Met’s specialist crime command are appealing for witnesses, mobile phone/dash camera/CCTV footage and any information that could assist with the investigation.”
Primrose Hill, a leafy suburb of London, is popular for its views of the capital.
Shocked witnesses took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to reveal their horror, with one writing: “People are so desensitized now, they just looked at a dead body with their kids. Who brings out a knife on New Years?”
And London Mayor Sadiq Khan added: “It is an absolute tragedy when a young person loses their life to senseless violence. Keeping Londoners and their communities safe is my top priority.”
A man has been arrested on suspicion of Harry’s murder and is being held in police custody.
Extensive police cordons remain in place while officers carry out forensic examinations of the scene and surrounding area.
