Ajay was born on August 3, 1955. He is 68 years old and is a business tycoon in Bagar Town, Jhunjhunu District, Rajasthan. He grew up in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Ajay’s surname was “Makhariya” but later, his father Gopikrishna Piramal used his grandfather’s name “Piramal” as his surname and then, this surname was continued to the descendants.
Initially, his grandfather Seth Piramal Chaturbhuj Makharia ran the cotton business and later established the Piramal business empire in 1920 after acquiring the oldest and first registered cotton mill in India, “Morarjee Mills”.
In the 1920s, Seth Piramal Chaturbhuj earned a great reputation through his charitable work for the development of Bhagarh.
Ajay has completed his B.A. (Honours) degree from Jai Hind College, Mumbai and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management, Mumbai. Later, he went to Harvard Business School in Boston, USA to study the Advanced Management Program (AMP).

At the age of 22, he took over his father’s textile and cutting tool business. He used to run the business in partnership with his brothers Dilip and Ashok. In 1984, when his second brother Ashok passed away from cancer, he was appointed Chairman of “Piramal Enterprises” and Chairman and Managing Director of “Morarjee Mills”. In 1982, he invested in the ‘Gujarat Glass’ industry, which proved to be very profitable for him.

In 2005, he invested Rs 1.8 billion in commercial real estate investment company “The Glass Group” for a purchase price of Rs 840 million.
In 2009, he expanded his business by acquiring Minrad, an interventional pain management pharmaceutical company, for Rs 1.88 billion. In the same year, he established a non-profit organization called Piramal Foundation to provide education, healthcare, livelihood and youth empowerment to minorities in India. The foundation was also awarded the Corporate Trailblazer Award by the India Today Group from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In 2010, he sold the domestic formulation business to Abbott Laboratories for $3.8 billion. In 2017, he started the housing finance business at Piramal Finance Limited (PFL).
