Ali Wong Files for Divorce from Justin Hakuta Over a Year After Announcing Split

Ali Wong filed for divorce from Justin Hakuta more than a year after they announced their split.

The Beef star and comedian, 41, cited “irreconcilable differences” in divorce documents obtained by PEOPLE and listed the date of her separation from Hakuta, 41, as April 10, 2022. The couple is said to have a prenuptial agreement.

Wong is seeking joint legal and physical custody of their two children, daughters Mari, 8, and Nikki, 6. The documents also state that the actress and Hakuta are mediating their assets.

The divorce filing comes after Wong confirmed that she had split from Hakuta in April last year.

A source told PEOPLE of the split at the time, “It was amicable and they will continue to co-parent lovingly.”

Wong met tech entrepreneur Hakuta at a friend’s wedding in 2010. The couple hit it off immediately and married in San Francisco on November 27, 2014.

Wong spoke about signing the prenuptial agreement in her 2019 memoir dedicated to her daughters, Dear girls: intimate stories, untold secrets and advice for the best life. In the memoir, according to CNBC, the actress said she felt “more motivated to earn my own money because I signed a document that specifically stated how much I could not depend on my husband.”

“In the end, being forced to sign that prenup was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me and my career,” Wong added. In April, it was confirmed to PEOPLE that Wong and Hader, 45, had rekindled their romance, and the couple has since been seen together on several occasions.

Wong said in March that despite the split, she and Hakuta are still “best friends” and are “really, really close.”

“We’ve been through so much together. It’s a very unconventional divorce,” she said The Hollywood Reporter.

Wong also spoke about the attention her divorce received and shared that out of everyone’s reactions, her mother’s was the hardest to deal with.

“I didn’t expect the announcement to be so widespread, but by far the hardest part of the divorce was my mother’s reaction,” Wong continued. “I already told her I thought we might get a divorce and she was very upset.”

“She looked me in the eye and asked, ‘Can you just wait until I die?’ She literally asked me not to live life for myself. But she is 82 years old, what should I expect? … But it was still really freaking hard to deal with all my fear of the shame it would bring her.”
