All About Cheryl Hines’ Daughter, Catherine Rose Young

The Curb your enthusiasm star became a mom in 2004 when she and her ex-husband Paul Young welcomed their only child together.

“I think one good thing and I’m leaving,” Hines told PEOPLE about whether or not she plans to have more children. “I know that people have more than one child and manage to divide their time, but I don’t know if I could do it. I like having someone I can give everything to.”

Hines has since become a loving stepmother to her husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s six children, but still has a special bond with Catherine, whom she affectionately calls Cat.

“You can’t even imagine how much I love and adore you,” the actress wrote on Instagram for her daughter’s birthday in March 2023. “Through thick & thin baby!!!!! We have each other.”

From a young age, Catherine did everything with her mom, including appearing in her movies and walking the red carpet. Today, they are business partners for their Hines + Young brand, and Hines said that no matter what, Catherine has her support.

She was born in 2004

Hines and Young married on December 30, 2002, and had a daughter a year and a half later, on March 8, 2004. When Catherine was 6 years old, the couple filed for divorce and shared custody of her.

“They will remain very close friends and raise their daughter together,” Hines’ rep said in a statement about their separation, per E! On the line.

While Hines admitted that Catherine wasn’t always “well-behaved,” she said her child knew how to use humor to her advantage.

“The problem is that I tell Catherine every day how sweet she is and how much I love her,” she told PEOPLE in 2011. “So when she misbehaves, she says something that she knows will make me laugh. Then it softens me up a bit.”

The Suburgatory the star also revealed her long-term thoughts on who her child might one day become. “My main concern is that she stays true to herself and doesn’t get influenced by other kids,” Hines added. “I want her to make the decisions that are right for her.”

Hines was a hands-on working mother

Hines has worked hard to balance her acting career with being a current mom to her daughter.

“I really like to work and it makes me happy to work, and that’s important to me because it makes me a happy mother,” she told PEOPLE in 2010. “When I’m at home, I try not to think about work, and when I’m at work, I try not to be obsessing over what I miss at home.”

During their quality time at home, Hines shared that she liked to “put my daughter to bed at night.”

“And I’m there in the morning when she wakes up so I can send her to school,” she added. “You just have to take your time – it’s a precious commodity – and manage it properly.”

The Grinch the actress also shared that Catherine liked to join her on set and respected the rules when she was in the studio. “She’s sitting at the monitors and she knows she can’t peek or she’s going to get kicked out,” Hines said. “We have a lot of fun together. She is a very funny girl!”

Catherine remains close to her childhood nanny

When she couldn’t be at home, Hines turned to her longtime personal assistant, Sarita, for help, calling her “the light in the harbor.”

According to Hines, the two originally connected while she was working on Curb your enthusiasm and she was hiring someone to organize it. Bonded by their Tallahassee roots, Sarita’s role eventually evolved into nanny after Catherine’s birth.

“I found out I’m pregnant,” Hines said while renovating Sarita’s house on HGTV. Celebrity bonds 2022 “I looked at her and said, ‘What do you know about babies?’ She said, ‘Nothing,’ and I said, ‘Me neither… maybe, do you want to try it together?’ ”

For eight years, Hines could count on Sarita to be by his daughter’s side. “Catherine is the person she is because of Sarita,” said the actress. “As a parent, the only thing that really matters is that you raise your child to be the best person they can be, and Sarita knows that, and she knew that then. Cat has learned so much.”

Today, the trio remain friends. “Catherine means the world to me,” Sarita said on the show. “She was my best friend… I can’t imagine my world without her [Cheryl and Catherine]. It’s still a very close relationship.”

Catherine has always been a natural performer

Whether it’s her entertainment industry parents or “showbiz in her blood”, Catherine has been a natural performer since childhood.

“If we have friends over, she puts on her tutu and does comedy,” Hines said Parade in 2010

She also liked to be photographed. “We go to Whole Foods and if there’s a photographer there, she literally wants to stop,” Hines shared with PEOPLE in 2010. “For some reason, she loves the paparazzi!”

Catherine even shared the screen with her mom in two films — RV in 2006 and Grand 2007. Still, she was worried about whether her little one would follow in her footsteps into acting.

“I would support her in anything she wanted to do, but I would tell her not to be an actress unless she literally felt a burning sensation in her stomach telling her she had to be,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s a tough road.”

Catherine’s stepfather is Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Four years after Catherine’s parents divorced, her mom married Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in August 2014, bringing to the marriage six of Kennedy’s siblings. “[He’s] a devoted father and an all-around good guy,” Hines told PEOPLE that same year.

On the eve of the wedding, Hines was excited about the blending of their tribes. “It’s fun to have two families come together,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s so very sweet. I come from a big family and the Kennedys are a big family. It feels natural. It’s a fun feeling.”

Most recently, Kennedy ran for president and had the support of his wife before dropping out in October 2023.

“My husband, Robert Kennedy Jr. announced today that he will run for president and I support his decision,” she said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE in April of that year.

Catherine is a student

Catherine graduated from high school in June 2022, and her mom couldn’t be more excited about her success.

“One day we’re spinning in teacups, and the next day you’re graduating from high school! Cat, my beautiful girl, I am so proud of you,” Hines wrote on Instagram. “You are smart, brave, beautiful, witty, thoughtful and simply radiate light.”

Two months later, the mother-daughter duo packed up and hit the road to take Catherine to college. “Road trip to college send off”, she wrote along with the video of the adventure. “Happy tears. For all parents – we will be fine!!!”

Now in college, Catherine seems to be having a great time enjoying new experiences with friends and joining a sorority.

After initially teasing the collaboration with her daughter, Hines revealed that in May 2023, they started a cosmetics company.

“I can finally say that my daughter Cat and I are launching a Hines+Young self-care line!” she wrote on Instagram, calling the occasion “one of the most exciting days” of her life.

Hines added that she is “constantly inspired and in awe” of her daughter and is “so thrilled to be starting this journey together.”

For her part, Catherine captioned the post that she’s “so grateful to have created this amazing brand with my amazing mother and best friend.”

Starting college and running a business may seem like a lot at once, but it was all part of Hines’ master plan to stay close to her daughter while she’s away at school.

“I was getting so sad that she was about to leave home and I was trying to figure out a way to keep her with me in a way other than living together,” she told Morning Honey. “Of course, she’s growing up and needs to move out and be on her own, but I also wanted to empower her as a young woman. I asked her if we could start a company together.”
