For Applegate, becoming a mother filled her with a “level of love” that was overwhelming.

“I love my child…more than I’ve ever known [is] possible”, the Dead to me the actress told PEOPLE before getting emotional. “Like, humanly possible. It’s a spiritual thing… I really love it.”

As Applegate has continued to balance her acting career with her health issues (including having her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in 2017 and being diagnosed with MS in 2021), her primary focus through it all has been being a mother to Sadie.

“The most important person in this world is my daughter,” Applegate said as she accepted her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in November 2022. “You are so much more than you know. You are so beautiful and sweet and loving and smart and interesting, and I am blessed every day that I wake up and take you to your school. You are my Everything. Thank you for standing by me through all of this.”

Sadie Grace was born on January 27, 2011 in LA to parents Applegate and LeNoble, who were engaged at the time. During her pregnancy, Applegate told PEOPLE that she would be “a little hippie and a little Type A” as a mother.

“I’m going to take from what my mother did, which was hippie and like ‘Do what you want,’ and I’m going to bring some things that I know from watching my friends raise their kids. Kind of a fusion,” she added.

After Sadie was born, Applegate opened up to PEOPLE about how becoming a mother changed her life. She described how holding Sadie for the first time was “deep” and filled her with overwhelming love.

“I felt my heart literally open up for the first time and wrap around her,” Applegate told PEOPLE. “And I’m falling more in love with her every minute of the day.”

Her birth helped “cure” Applegate

Sadie’s 2011 birth was a healing experience for Applegate, the actress shared with PEOPLE. Applegate was previously diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and underwent a double mastectomy.

“I had to talk about that word [cancer] more than I’ve ever had to speak a word in my life,” Applegate said. “After a while you say, ‘There’s got to be something else for me.’ ”

She continued: “I’m a mom now. She healed me in so many ways. She just made my life so much better. She opened up my whole soul.”

Applegate spoke further The Ellen DeGeneres Show about how the moments after Sadie’s birth — especially laying her newborn daughter on her chest — also helped repair her relationship with her body after a double mastectomy.

“I dropped my dress, which I don’t do,” Applegate said. “This part of my body [her chest] it’s very private to me … it’s a really private place. A place with which, let’s say, I’m not on good terms. But the moment I pulled it out, I just tore it [gown] off.”

Applegate added, “There’s a room full of people I don’t know. Nurses and doctors. And she and I were just laying there. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”

She grew up on the set with her parents

Sadie was exposed to the world of television at a young age: as a baby she was often on the set of the former NBC comedy Up all nightwhich starred Applegate and LeNoble as music composers.

“My whole thing was, ‘I’m not going to do this unless I can bring her.’ They had to make me a room for her and she has toys and a crib in it and she naps there,” Applegate explained. “It’s called the crazy mother who said, ‘No, I’m not doing anything unless I can be with my baby.’ ”

Sadie also influenced the show’s storyline, with aspects of her birth appearing in a season one episode. “I was talking to the writer and I said, ‘Look, I’m going to give you some advice: I needed a headband,'” Applegate said. “I was obsessed with having a headband and it was really about me having to be in control of the situation. I would even text myself ‘Don’t forget the headband. Don’t forget the headband!’ ”

She discovered that her mom was known by a friend

Despite spending time on set as a baby, Sadie didn’t find out her mother was a famous actress until she was 7 — and a friend from school broke the news.

“One of her friends said, ‘You know, your mom is famous,’ and she said, what?” Applegate told PEOPLE in 2018, “She said, ‘Mom, what does that mean? Are you famous?’ ”

Applegate explained it to Sadie in the simplest of terms. “It’s not bad,” she explained, “I just work where people see it and kind of know who I am.”

But to Sadie, Applegate was just like all the other moms at her school—thanks to her anonymous appearance. “Nobody knows who I am at school,” Applegate joked. “I have my mom’s bun, I’m always dirty, I never wear makeup, I dress like a slag.”

She must not be an actress before the age of 18

Sadie has a very “fun” personality, Applegate revealed to PEOPLE in 2018. Her talents at the time included comedy, music — and accents. “She has a lot of accents in her repertoire,” Applegate said of Sadie. “She’s such a fool.”

Despite her comedic skills, Sadie’s primary focus back then was on her music, Applegate said. “She loves to play the piano; that’s what she loves to do right now,” the proud mom shared. “She thinks she’s going to be a singer, okay?”

But if Sadie ever expresses an interest in following in her mother’s footsteps and becoming an actress, Applegate has a “very strict rule” for her daughter: “She can study acting until she’s 18, and then if she wants to pursue it as a career, she has the right to make that decision Applegate told PEOPLE. “But under my roof you train and become the best you can be.”

She added: “And also have a good education because … the chances of being successful in this business are really, really [slim].”

She is a vegetarian

After Applegate’s diagnosis of the BRCA1 gene mutation — which predisposes her to developing certain types of cancer — the actress focused on eliminating junk food and stress from her life and the lives of her family.

“We grow our own vegetables. It’s not an option for everyone. But just get a tomato plant!” Applegate told PEOPLE in 2017. She continued, “We’re a 100 percent organic house… We’re really conscious of what we buy. Get some kale! Plant some green kale in your yard and throw it in everything.”

As a result of her family’s healthy lifestyle, Sadie has been a vegetarian since she was at least 6 years old. “My daughter is vegetarian and practically vegan. That’s her choice. That’s how she eats,” Applegate revealed.

And for Applegate, it’s especially important that Sadie leads a healthy lifestyle knowing that she too could inherit the BRCA1 gene mutation.

“The chances of my daughter being BRCA positive are very high,” Applegate told PEOPLE. “I watch her and feed her the purest food. I try to reduce her stress level. I do everything I can on my end knowing that in 20 years she will have to start testing. I hope by then there will be some progress. It breaks my heart to think that it is possible.”

In January 2023, Sadie joined her mom at the 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles — marking Applegate’s first appearance at the awards since her MS diagnosis in 2021. The mother-daughter duo coordinated in black outfits, but Applegate later revealed that Sadi’s suit had a special meaning.

“Just a fun fact, the suit my kid is wearing was Scott Weiland’s suit from one of his solo album covers. Scott gave my husband, Martyn, that suit back in the glorious 90s,” Dead to me the actress tweeted.

The following month, Applegate brought Sadie to the 2023 SAG Awards. The mother-daughter duo wore matching outfits to the event, with Bad moms star in a floor-length velvet tuxedo dress while Sadie was seen in a black double-breasted suit.

In January 2024, Sadie accompanied her mom to the 75th Emmy Awards, where Applegate received a standing ovation as the surprise host.

Applegate’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis changed the way her parents

Speaking to PEOPLE in March 2024, Applegate said Sadie had to “see the loss of her mother” because of her battle with MS.

“Dance with her every day. Pick her up from school every day. He works in his school, he works in the library. To be present outside the house, outside your bed. She doesn’t see those things anymore. This is a loss for her as well. And we’re both learning as we go,” Applegate said.

Now, Sadie has noticed that her mom isn’t always able to do the things she used to, like drive to school, and she knows that when she sees Applegate lying on her side, it means “she can’t ask me to do anything.”

She added: “And it breaks me, it breaks me. Because I like doing things for my child. I like to prepare food for her. I love bringing it to her. I love it all, and sometimes I just can’t. But I’m trying. I am trying.”

“It’s heartbreaking when you have to tell your child, ‘I can’t.’ It’s the worst feeling in the world as a mother,” Applegate said. “You’re their protector in life. When you have to say, ‘I can’t,’ it tears your soul apart. It drives me crazy every day.”
