All About Cy! Everything Jennifer Lawrence Has Said About Her Son

Jennifer Lawrence’s life changed when she had her son Cy.

PEOPLE confirmed in September 2021 that Lawrence and Cooke Maroney — who married in October 2019 — were expecting their first child. Cy was born in February 2022, and the couple was spotted out and about with their newborn in April.

That same month, Amy Schumer said vanity fair during a lie detector test that she hadn’t met the baby yet and didn’t know his name, adding that Lawrence was “smart enough” not to tell her. In September 2022, Lawrence confirmed that Vogue that she gave birth to a son and revealed that she named him Cy.

Since her birth, Lawrence has taken a different approach to her career.

“There’s no squeezing when you have a baby,” Cameron Diaz said in a 2023 interview. Interview magazine. “There’s only home, and that’s the best. It definitely helps eliminate the projects: ‘Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No. Is this worth being away from your child for half a day?’ ”

It was named after a famous artist

Lawrence confirmed that Vogue in September 2022 that she gave birth to a boy in February and named him Cy Maroney. She also revealed that it was named after the American painter Cy Twombly, who is one of her husband’s favorite artists.

Twombly, who died in 2011, was known for his large abstract works. The choice of stage name makes sense given that Cooke is currently the director of the Gladstone Gallery.

Lawrence joked that she loved him as much as her cat

The Hunger Games the actress brought her signature honesty to the subject of motherhood – particularly her initial fears and doubts about being a mother. Speaking with vogue, Lawrence said that before she welcomed Cy, she was worried about whether she would be able to love him as much as she loved her cat.

“It’s so scary to talk about motherhood,” she said. “Because it’s so different for everyone. If I say, ‘It was amazing from the beginning,’ some people will think, ‘I wasn’t amazing at first,’ and they’ll feel bad.”

Lawrence continued: “Luckily, I have so many girlfriends who have been honest … so I felt so ready to forgive. I remember I was walking with one of my best friends when I was about nine months old and I was like, ‘Everybody keeps saying that Voljet I will love my child more than my cat, but that may not be true as much as my cat.”

Lawrence said Cy changed her career

Before becoming a mom, Lawrence had an intense work schedule. But since giving birth, she has been more selective in her projects.

In addition to being picky about what she works on, Lawrence also prepares for the unique challenges that children of high-profile parents can face.

“Children have advantages and disadvantages when they are born, everything,” said actress Diaz. “The best I can do is make sure he knows he’s loved and comes first and try to be a good example of kindness.”

She continued: “I’m sure there will be challenges especially because of my choices and my lifestyle, and we’ll both have to face it and deal with it when that day comes.”

She accepted the paparazzi as a part of her son’s life

Lawrence told Diaz that when she was pregnant, she was “so nervous” about having her baby photographed. But after Cy was born, she realized that her energy was more important to him than the paparazzi – and she didn’t want him to inherit the anger she can have when seeing photographers.

“If he senses that I’m anxious before I leave the house or that I’m angry when we’re out, it’s going to affect him,” Lawrence said. “So it actually did the opposite, where I got a little more zen and a little more relaxed about taking pictures because I don’t have a choice. You just have to accept it, take a deep breath and walk.”

Lawrence said she has remorse

During the 2022 episode Diversity’with Actors on actors series, Lawrence spoke with Viola Davis — who has one daughter, Genesis, and two stepchildren with her husband, Julius Tennon — about the guilt that comes with motherhood.

“Every day that I’m a mom, I feel terrible,” Lawrence said. “I feel guilty. I play with him and ask myself, ‘Is this what he wants to do? Should we be outside? What if he’s cold? What if he’s going to get sick? Should we be inside? Is this enough?’ ”

Despite her fears about starting a family, The X-Men the actress said that she now feels more capable than ever. Lawrence told Davis, “I know I can do it, and I know I love it, and I know I’m doing a good job and I’ll always try to do a good job.”

She loves Cy “so much it’s impossible”

The Silver Linings Playbook said the actress Vogue that Cy changed her life overnight.

“The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life started over,” Lawrence said. “As if now is the first day of my life. I was so in love… My heart stretched to a capacity I didn’t know existed. I include my husband in that.”

She continued, “I think Cy’s euphoria is just — Jesus, it’s impossible. I always tell him, ‘I love you so much it’s impossible.’ ”
