All About Drew Barrymore’s Relationship with Her Mom Jaid Barrymore

Drew Barrymore and her mother, Jaid Barrymore, have had a complicated relationship for years.

As a child actress raised by a single mother, Drew — the only child of the late actor John Drew Barrymore and once-aspiring actress Jaid — has been open about partying with her mother from an early age (he even brought 9-year-old Drew to Studio 54 with Jaid) . Her unconventional upbringing culminated when Drew was emancipated from her parents at the age of 14. Soon after, she kicked her mother out of her life.

Losing her mother at such a young age was “the worst pain I’ve ever known,” Drew later revealed on The Howard Stern Show 2021. Their relationship remained difficult well into Drew’s adult life — even when she became a mother herself. (The actress has daughters Olive and Frankie with ex-husband Will Kopelman.)

“It’s the hardest class of my life,” Drew said Marie Claire about her mother in 2014 when the two were still estranged. “I was never just mad at her. I have always felt guilt, empathy and extreme sensitivity. But we can’t really be in each other’s lives right now.”

Drew was born on February 22, 1975 to John Drew and Jaid – and while her parents didn’t officially divorce until 1984, Drew’s father has been out of the picture since she was very young. Despite his absence, Drew reported in an Instagram post about her late father in June 2020 that she “kind of” has “zero baggage or daddy issues.”

“My mom picked a wild card for my dad,” Drew wrote on social media about her father, who died in 2004. “I think I’d like to have a dad who doesn’t look like that. Or who is left. Or he really was capable of everything. But his wildness goes through me.”

However, Drew’s relationship with her mother was complicated from an early age. As a single mother, Jaid worked as a waitress six nights a week to support herself and Drew – but Drew saw her mother’s efforts as abandonment.

It was “another parent who didn’t care about me,” Drew told PEOPLE in 1989.

But in his 2015 memoir A wild flowerDrew had a more sympathetic opinion of her mother.

“I was born in 1975 to a single mother who did her best when she was young,” Drew wrote. “I’m not one to hold a grudge against the fact that our life together has been so incredibly unorthodox.”

When Drew started acting as a child (he famously appeared in 1982 ET as a seven-year-old), her mother, Jaid, gave up her career to focus solely on her daughter. Jaid took over as Drew’s manager, getting involved in every aspect of Drew’s blossoming acting career — from reading scripts to going to auditions.

But growing up, Drew didn’t appreciate her mother’s involvement in her business. In fact, it became a major point of contention in their relationship when she was younger, she revealed to PEOPLE in 1989.

“I came to resent her because it seemed too much [of her] life and career are invested in me,” Drew said at the time.

But as Drew grew up and matured, she began to see her mother’s dedication to her acting career in a different light. “I never realized that my mom changed my life so I could continue to do something I love,” she said.

In 2018, Drew recounted her childhood party days to the late Norm Macdonald on his Netflix show Norm Macdonald has a performance.

“I had a mom, but she was more like my best friend,” Drew told Macdonald. “She said, ‘Do you want to go to school and be bullied all day, or do you want to go to Studio 54?’ And I said: ‘Yes, absolutely!’ ”

When Drew became a teenager, her turbulent relationship with her mother came to a head when Jaid committed her to a psychiatric ward at age 13. “I was going to clubs, not going to school and stealing my mom’s car and, you know, I was out of control,” Drew reflected during an appearance on the 2021 show. The Howard Stern Show.

Drew spent 18 months in a mental institution, and when she was 14, she successfully became an emancipated minor – making her a legal adult with the same rights and privileges as an 18-year-old. At the time, Drew told PEOPLE that she sought emancipation so that her work hours would not be regulated by the law’s child labor restrictions.

“It’s a big thing to consider when people cast you,” she said at the time.

Decades later, Drew wrote more about her emancipation from her parents in her 2015 memoir. A wild flower. According to Drew, it was a way to rebuild his acting career after his time in a psychiatric ward.

“The job was a very positive thing in my life, and unfortunately it was taken away from me because my mother also put me in an institution because she felt helpless,” Drew wrote. “But when people found out, they just wrote me off as damaged goods, and I realized that, unfortunately.”

She added: “I was never unprofessional, but I was on a break from employment.”

Drew went on to describe her emancipation as starting life over, on her “own terms” – a move her mother Jaid fully supported, she added.

After her emancipation, Drew and her mother became estranged for many years.

“We broke up when I was fourteen and have rarely spoken since,” Drew wrote in A wild flower.

Despite going many years without speaking, Drew revealed in her memoir that she still supported her mother financially and cared for her.

“I am grateful to this woman for bringing me into this world and it would break my heart to know she was anywhere in need,” Drew wrote. “I’m not one to hold a grudge against the fact that our life together has been so incredibly unorthodox.”

In 2023, Drew elaborated on her complicated relationship with her mother Sup profile, revealing that – despite their history – he will always care for Jaid and wishes her no ill will.

After years of strife in their relationship, Drew revealed in a March 2021 episode of the show The Drew Barrymore Show that she and her mother Jaid were in a “good” place.

“There’s just some peace, respect and maturity there that maybe couldn’t have existed before. Timing is everything,” Drew said on her talk show about her relationship with her mother.

In December 2022, Drew opened up to PEOPLE more about forging a healthy relationship with Jaida after years of disagreements. The actress revealed how being a mother herself (to daughters Olive and Frankie) has helped her put her own mother in perspective – and how she will always be there for her.

“I will always support her,” Drew told PEOPLE of Jaid. “I cannot turn my back on the person who gave me life. I can not do it. It would hurt me so much. I would find that so cruel. But there are moments where I realized that our chemistry and behavior would make me feel like I had to say, ‘Okay, I need a break again.’ ”

Drew also shared that she and Jaid have maintained a healthy relationship by establishing “a lot of boundaries,” she said. “And we’ve taken many breaks in our lives. Healthy breaks, I mean, friends have to do it, those who live longer, that’s where we are.”
