All About Iman and David Bowie’s Daughter Alexandria “Lexi” Jones

Iman and David Bowie’s love lives on through their daughter, Alexandria “Lexi” Zahra Jones.

The supermodel and the singer met on a blind date in Los Angeles in 1990, and for Bowie it was “love at first sight”. “It took me a few months, but I got there,” Iman later told PEOPLE.

The couple married in Florence, Italy in 1992 and had daughter Lexi in 2000. Iman and Bowie, born David Robert Jones, were together for almost 24 years before his untimely death from cancer in 2016.

Although they valued Lexa’s privacy and usually didn’t talk about her in interviews, the couple did get a glimpse into their family life shortly after her birth. At the time, they said Hello! about how happy they were to welcome Lexi into their lives.

This has to be the happiest moment of my life, said Iman. “Alexandria was a force around which everyone rallied. And my soul feels complete.” Bowie added: “I can’t do better than that. It really feels perfect.”

She was born in 2000

Iman and Bowie celebrated the arrival of daughter Lexi on August 15, 2000 in New York City.

At the time of her birth, PEOPLE reported that Lexi weighed 7 lbs., 4.6 oz. Bowie’s publicist said: “David assisted with the delivery and cut the umbilical cord.”

Her name has a special meaning

Shortly after Lexa’s birth, Iman and Bowie spoke with Hello! for what Iman called Lexi’s “first and last interview.” Bowie told the paper about the meaning behind his daughter’s name – a name he had been thinking about since he first met Iman.

The couple considered several name options, but didn’t seriously consider some until they knew they were having a girl.

“The first names we picked were Alexandria and Zahra,” he said. “Then we went through a cycle of maybe 20 or 30 more alternatives.” The day before her birth, they decided on their initial choices.

Bowie explained that the name Alexander “has always been his favourite”. “I can only ask you to believe that when Iman and I were talking about names, she suggested that if it’s a girl then it should be Alexandria, after the Greek-Egyptian city,” said the singer. “She had no idea how close it was to my own choice.”

He added that Zahra was Imana’s original name, but it was changed at the last minute. “It’s the Arabic form of Sarah and depending on where you look for the definition, you’ll find something of the following: inner light; radiant; beautiful and beautiful; blossoming; or even shining,” he said.

Lexi is an artist

Lexi shares some of her art on her personal Instagram account and has a separate account dedicated to her work. The designs consist of bold colors and abstract characters that are available for printing on notebooks, bags and clothing.

“Art has been a rock in my life for as long as I can remember,” she wrote on Instagram in 2021. “I took art classes as a child… However, I didn’t take art seriously and didn’t start questioning and finding my own style until I wasn’t in my mid-teens.”

Lexi continued, “I developed a deeper passion and knew that I wanted to create and share my work with the intention of inspiring and encouraging others to create their own… Art is able to evoke so many emotions, questions and reactions, which I personally think incredibly powerful.”

In the same year, Iman also spoke briefly about her daughter’s art in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar.

“David was a painter; my daughter is a painter,” she said. “I’ve never painted in my life, so I embraced it. I learned that you don’t have to be good at something to start doing it. Just get out of the way, go for it.”

She is not interested in modeling

Despite having a supermodel as a mum, Lexi has no plans to follow in her footsteps on the catwalk or in front of the cameras – a decision Iman supports.

In the 2018 interview CarrierIman said this after she posted 18 photos of Lexi on Instagram in honor of her 18th birthday and “every agency, every designer” offered to work with her.

Iman’s response was quick. “I said, ‘No, he doesn’t,'” she recalled. “I know why they wanted her to be a model – it’s because she’s David Bowie’s daughter.”

Iman encouraged Body Positivity for Lexi

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2021, Iman shared how she was cautious about discussing body image in front of Lexi.

“It starts with women and it starts with young girls,” Iman said of the messages surrounding the topic. As for her approach, she revealed that she “never — no matter how I felt about myself — said in front of her, ‘Oh, I’ve gained weight.’ ”

Years later, Lexi reminded Iman of her own words. ” she told me afterwards [the pandemic] and I gained eight pounds, I said, ‘I can’t fit into my pants.’ She said, ‘Buy a bigger pair,'” Iman recalled. “Problem solved.”

He has two older siblings

Although Lexi is Iman and Bowie’s only child, they were already parents before her arrival.

Bowie and his first wife, Angie, had a son, Duncan Jones, in 1971. He has since become a director, screenwriter and producer. Duncan also has two children with his wife, photographer Rodene Ronquillo.

Meanwhile, Iman and her first husband, former NBA star Spencer Haywood, had their daughter, Zulekha Haywood, in 1978. Like Lexi, Zulekha lives out of the spotlight but shares bits of her life on social media, including pictures of her own family, food and outings .

Tribute to Iman and Bowie

In between photos of her art and everyday life, Lexi also posts photos of her parents and reminisces about fond memories.

In September 2022, she shared a throwback video with her dad of her sitting on Bowie’s lap as they sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” together. “My Wizard of Oz,” she wrote in the caption.

A year earlier, Lexi had wished her mom a happy Mother’s Day with an older picture of the couple hugging. “Kudos to my Mutha. I love you to pieces,” she wrote.

He has a tattoo for his father

Two years after Bowie’s death, Lexi got a tattoo of her father and his legacy in January 2018.

Her tattoo is a moon with an intricate design with the words, “Dad xx” and the years of his birth and death, “1947-2016.”

Iman also marked the anniversary with a tattoo on her ankle. She was given a Bowie knife – after which her late husband took his stage name – which says “David” on the handle.

“You will always be a part of us,” Iman captioned a photo of the inky on Instagram. Lexi also shared a shot of her tattoo with the message “I love you.”
