All About James Gandolfini’s Son, Michael Gandolfini

If the name Michael Gandolfini rings a bell, it’s thanks to his father, James Gandolfini, the star The Soprano familywho died in 2013.

Michael, who was just 14 when his father died, reprized his father’s famous role years later in the 2021 sequel. Many Newark Saints. He received enormous praise as the young Tony Soprano, particularly from his stepmother Deborah Lin, who said Page six, “It was almost surreal to see Michael in the trailer. I know it took a lot of courage for him to take on this role. It was very emotional.”

Ahead of the film’s release, the actor admitted The New York Times that he felt a certain degree of pressure about taking on the role. He explained: “There is fear. But the other layer, which a lot of people don’t think about, and which was actually harder, is playing Tony Soprano… not only was it my father’s feeling – it was like he was Tony Soprano [expletive] difficult character.”

Michael’s father James passed away in 2013 while father and son were traveling in Italy with Michael’s stepmother and half-sister. Michael was only 14 years old at the time.

As an adult, Michael is greatly inspired by his father as an actor and a person. While preparing to play Tony Soprano in 2021, Michael would walk and listen to his father’s dialogue for hours. Watching my father play the character he played was a powerful experience. He said Esquire“He starts singing, then he starts crying, then he’s angry with himself for crying, and then he laughs at himself.”

“He literally goes through about four emotions within forty seconds! And they’re all so down-to-earth and I remember being blown away by him,” added Michael.

He grew up in New York and Los Angeles

Michael spent most of his childhood in New York, where he was born in May 1999 to James and his ex-wife Marcy Wudarski. He said G. Feel good that he grew up both in the city and in Los Angeles. He also told the publication that he was “grateful” for the experience of living in both cities, adding: “I’ve traveled between both cities for most of my life and I think they’ve defined me in many ways. I met a lot of people and saw a lot of things.”

He played his father’s Soprano character

In 2021, Michael resurrected his father figure from The Soprano family when he played Tony Soprano in the prequel Many Newark Saints. Despite that incredibly close relationship, the younger Gandolfini made one thing clear: “I didn’t play my father,” he said. “I played Tony.”

He also said that part of taking on the role meant reducing his father’s physical gestures and mannerisms. Michael explained: “It’s like I look like my dad, I don’t have those gestures. I don’t have an accent, the way he uses his eyes. All those things are things that I wanted to develop because if I could get his physicality, maybe I could have more room to do what I want to do emotionally.”

Playing Tony Soprano also meant that Michael had to reckon with the fact that his dad would never be able to enjoy his performance. In an interview with WSJ magazine, he admitted: “I knew there was no way in the world I was going to make my dad proud — because I can’t. I understand that it is. But I wanted to do it [producer] David is proud, and I wanted to make my fellow actors proud and learn as much as I could – that was the goal I could set.”

Michael never looked The Soprano family before taking on the role of Tony for Newarkand he said Esquire that the experience was emotional. The actor said The New York Times that he decided to watch the entire first season alone and added: “It was hard to watch Dad alone and then have no one to lean on.”

The experience of playing the same character gave him a unique insight into his father, Michael added. “That’s how he was not Tony,” he said. “The only insight I think I gained was a deep pride in him. I’m exhausted after three months — you’ve been doing this for nine years?”

He has been sober since 2017

In May 2020, Michael shared on Instagram that he had been sober for three years. The actor announced the news on his 21st birthday. He captioned a photo of himself in front of a birthday cake: “Being sober and in recovery for the past few years is the greatest gift I could have received for my 21st birthday. Thank you all for the amazing birthday wishes. My life is so beautiful because of my amazing family, friends and community. I am very, very happy. I love you all.”

While talking to Esquire, said: “Technically, I’ve never had a legal drink. I’m part of the sober ‘never legally drank’ group that I love.’” Michael added that he shares his sobriety journey online in part because it’s so deeply personal. As he said, “I’ve had this disease in me, it runs in my family, and I’m so proud to be sober. I had to get sober at a young age because I knew from my history and from my behavior that I had this disease.”

Michael added: “I’m very vocal about my sobriety, because it saved my life and allowed me to be grateful… it saved my life.”

In March 2004, James gave a lengthy interview with Inside the Actor’s Studio. Although his career was certainly at the center of many questions, he was also asked what he does to relax and take a break from everything. For James, the answer was clear: “I read a lot. And my son — playing with my son [4-year-old Michael] it really takes me out of all this, because it’s all about him.”

Later in the interview, James also said that he hoped not to be portrayed as a mob boss forever, primarily because he wanted his son to be able to enjoy his job. As he said, “I can’t keep doing mafia roles. That would be idiotic. I think when I have a son, I don’t want to go to those places as much, you know what I mean? You want to play different types of characters that your son might see. If you’re doing character after character of dark people, I think eventually it might start to bother you.”
