Kehlani is “so proud” to be a mom.
The Grammy-nominated singer, who uses the pronouns she/they, welcomed her first child, Adeya Nomi Parrish Young-White, with guitarist Javie Young-White in March 2019.
Before giving birth, Kehlani was very open about her desire to become a mother. “If you know me, you know that I’ve dreamed of motherhood since I was very young. When I’m asked what my goals are, it’s always the idea of a big healthy happy family and whatever comes with that is a plus,” she wrote on Instagram.
Young-White and Kehlani split shortly after Adey’s arrival, and in August 2024, the guitarist filed for full custody of their daughter. In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, he claimed the “After Hours” singer is in a cult led by someone with “numerous allegations of sexual assault” on women and young girls.

She was born at home

Kehlani and Young-White welcomed their baby girl on March 23, 2019 at home in California. The singer revealed in a post on Instagram that has since been deleted that she gave birth to Adeya peacefully in their bathroom.
“This weekend our angel arrived safe and perfect in every way in our bathroom at home,” Kehlani wrote. “Having an unmedicated home birth was absolutely the hardest but most powerful thing I’ve ever done. Gratitude beyond words. In love beyond compare.”
Young-White also shared the news on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Adeya is home. Kehlani gave birth at home standing up, unmedicated, in my arms as we spoke her first words,” he wrote. – The most beautiful moment of my life.
He has a wonderful nickname

Kehlani often refers to their daughter by her adorable nickname “Bear” on social media.
In February 2022, the singer posted a sweet tribute to Adeyya using her nickname. “my truest love. my biggest piece. my every moment. my teddy bear. co-star for life,” she wrote on Instagram.
The “Up At Night” singer also used the moniker when they posted a card for Adeyya’s 3rd birthday in March 2022.
“I didn’t think I’d ever miss a birthday because of work, but you’re like, ‘I see. Mom’s at work!’ and we shook hands and Pinky vowed to have a princess rockstar pirate party when I get home TO THE MOON AND BACK, BEAR!” the singer wrote.

Adeya is following in her mother’s footsteps when it comes to music. In April 2022, Kehlani revealed during an interview with Apple Music that they often catch Adeyya singing songs from their album The Blue Water Road.
“She will forever have a point or five on all my projects because she’s really the driving force behind everything,” Kehlani said. “She loves being in the studio … She’ll say, ‘give me the mic,’ ask for a handheld and run around the studio. I have voice recordings … of my daughter with auto-tune on … just tearing it up.”
He has many hobbies

Adeya may have been interested in music, but she also has many other hobbies.
Kehlani said Vogue in April 2022 that her daughter likes to do different activities, from fishing to photography. The singer also allowed their daughter to pursue all kinds of hobbies in order to freely explore all her passions.
“It’s important to let her try all the things she wants because … I was able to do whatever I wanted and try all these different things,” Kehlani said. “My mom just knew how important it was and that’s why I grew up wearing so many hats, I think.”

At almost 3 years old, Adeya made her music video debut in February 2022 when she appeared in Kehlani’s music video for the song “Little Story”.
In an adorable cameo at the end of the black and white video, Adeya and her mom are seen playing in a stream and sharing a sweet hug.
She loves animals

Adeya is very comfortable around animals.
In addition to playing with a bird in a now-deleted Instagram video, Kehlani shared that Adeya loves hanging out with her two dogs. In a video interview with Voguethe mother of one cited being with animals as one of the most important parts of a healthy childhood as Adeya kissed one of the dogs.
The pair also spent some mother-daughter time together at the aquarium in August 2022. Kehlani posted photos on Instagram from their visit to the Sea Life Aquarium at the Mall of America in Minnesota, where the two posed in front of the large aquarium.
She was raised in an inclusive environment

Kehlani said The advocate in April 2021 that there are “a lot of social standards” they want to avoid imposing with Adey.
“You’re raised to find something you’re not passionate about and stick with it and make certain amounts of money … and then you’re not helping anyone and just hoarding everything,” Kehlani said. “Everything you could imagine we were taught is our purpose, I just want my daughter to know that it’s okay to feel like you don’t agree with any of that and it’s okay to march to the beat of your own drum.”
As someone who uses the pronouns she/them and identifies as a lesbian, Kehlani said it was important that Adeya was raised in an inclusive environment, so she knew she would be accepted regardless of her identity.
“All my friends, all her aunts, uncles, her godfathers, they’re all loudly queer,” the singer said. “Our generation has already kind of broken the mold to get to that point, so I don’t even think our kids will think of it as something they have to identify and differentiate. I feel like that should be normal.”
“We’re going to read queer stories, queer books where the baby has two dads, two moms, two parents who don’t identify with anyone. Movies that have that,” Kehlani added. “She sees healthy queer couples. So I don’t think she’s going to think about it at all as, ‘This is different from normal.'”
She went on tour with her mom

Adeya got a taste of the touring life when she hit the road with Kehlani for their Blue Water Road Trip 2022. While touring is a new dynamic for the duo, the singer spoke about the importance of doing “what’s best” for Adeya on the road.
“I don’t want her to ever feel like I dragged her along,” she said in an interview with Apple Music. “With the tour, I’m going the extra mile to make sure every venue is really baby-friendly and we’ll have a little kid’s room backstage and alcohol-free zones and just make sure everything is kid-friendly.”
In October 2022, Kehlani shared photos of Adeyea on stage during the final night of the North American leg of the tour. In the pictures, Adeya was waving to the crowd and cuddling her mom.
