All About Lainey Wilson’s Parents, Michelle and Brian Wilson

Lainey Wilson loves her parents, Brian and Michelle Wilson very much.

The country artist has racked up an impressive list of accolades in recent years, including the 2023 CMA Entertainer of the Year, but all of that pales in comparison to Brian and Michelle’s daughter in her book.

Born on May 19, 1992, Lainey is the second daughter of Brian and Michelle. She and her older sister Janna Wilson Sadler were raised in Brian’s hometown of Baskin, Louisiana. The small town, which has more cornfields than people, has become a constant in Lainey’s songwriting, as has her relationship with her parents.

“My family means a lot to me. I am who I am because of the people who raised me,” the “Watermelon Moonshine” singer told American Songwriter. “I love them, I really do. I feel like I wouldn’t be who I am if I hadn’t been raised by Brian and Michelle Wilson.”

Her parents may be her muse, but compliments don’t come cheap in the Wilson household. While promoting her fourth album, Bell Bottom CountryLainey told Taste of Country that her dad’s tapping is usually a sign that he’s sitting on a hit.

“He’s a man of few words. I’m talking about the only way I knew he liked a song of mine when I was little was if he tapped his toe or not,” she said. “And with [“Those Boots (Deddy’s Song)”], I let him, and he tapped his toe, so I said, well, look. But afterwards he said, ‘That’s bloody good.’ So I said, ‘We’re getting something!’ ”

Here’s everything you need to know about Lainey Wilson’s parents, Brian and Michelle Wilson, and their relationship with the rising country artist.

Having grown up in Baskin himself, Brian couldn’t imagine a better place to raise his children. A quaint country town, known for its corn and cotton fields, is located near the upper northwest corner of Louisiana.

During the performance at Southern Living‘with Biscuits and jam podcast, Lainey described her hometown as a “little fast trap” with “a bunch of hard-working people with good hearts.”

“It’s a town of about 200 people and some change.” Nothing but a bunch of cornfields, not even a searchlight. All 200 people are actually my family and if they are not related by blood, we might as well be related,” she joked.

Brian grows corn, wheat and oats on his family farm. As a child, Lainey remembers her father getting up “at the crack of dawn and late into the night” to work the fields.

On Biscuits and jam podcast, the country artist joked that spending quality time with her dad often means working with him. “He made us work,” Lainey said. “Most of the time, if we wanted to spend time with him, we had to go to the field and ride the tractor with him.”

“He is the hardest working person I know,” she added proudly.

Education was an important cornerstone of Lainey’s childhood. Michelle was a dedicated school teacher and taught her daughter how to “tell it like it is with grace,” Lainey said on Biscuits and jam podcast.

“My mom is the kindest woman I know. She also knows how to work hard and loves people and loves her family,” she said of her mom.

Before Lainey came along, the couple had a daughter named Janna. She works in corporate accounting and shares two sons, Knox and Ledger, with her husband, Taylor Salder. The couple got married on December 13, 2014.

Recently, Janna was in attendance to watch her little sister win Entertainer of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards. “A legend. @laineywilson you continue to break barriers with your unstoppable drive, vision and genuine kindness. You’re a damn good person and deserve all the wonderful things. We love you. We are so proud of you,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a carousel of photos from the evening.

While collaborating on the song “Wait in the Truck” together, Lainey and HARDY went rogue – and their friendship soon became a family affair. While appearing on Mo & StyckMan PLUSLainey revealed that her mom and HARDY’s mom are “best friends” and the two sat together at the 2023 CMA Awards.

Lainey went on to joke that the moms might even have a stronger bond than she and the “One Beer” singer-songwriter. “The other day I came in and my mom was getting a prescription from someone on the phone. I said, ‘Who was that?’ And she said, ‘Oh, that’s Mama HARDY,'” Lainey recalled. “Me and HARDY don’t even talk like that! It’s like ‘I’ll see you when I see you, bro’. ”

Both inspired songs from Lainey’s album Bell Bottom Country

Fans can learn a lot about Lainey’s upbringing from her lyrics, several of which refer back to her parents and growing up on a farm. Actually, track five is on Bell Bottom Country was largely inspired by one of her mom’s favorite sayings: “Fat”.

“It’s a saying my mom used to say, like, ‘We cook with fat now. Now we’re getting something,’ said Lainey during an interview for Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen. “I feel like they’re little sayings that I can’t escape. Certain things that my family said when I was growing up just kind of find their way into my music.”

Similarly, Lainey recalled helping her dad get ready for work while writing “Those Boots (Deddy’s Song).”

“What really inspired the song was that growing up me and my family lived in this uninsulated house and instead of adding on like a normal person would, [my parents] bought a portable building and cut out the side of it and bolted the thing to the house,” Lainey explained.

“So me and my sister lived in a trailer. We’d run into the house—anyway, I remember every morning, before Deddy would go to work, I remember he’d call out my name, and I’d run out of the mobile home into the house, and I’d help him pull his jeans down over the top of his boots,” she continued.

Brian was hospitalized for a yeast infection in 2022

In 2022, Brian spent two months in hospital being treated for a yeast infection which led to the removal of his left eye as well as facial bones. On top of that, he suffered a stroke.

During his stay, Brian underwent nine different surgeries and was in rehab for three weeks. Lainey told PEOPLE how terrifying it was to watch her father “fight for his life.”

“It’s a wonder he’s still here,” she said. “The neurologist who almost saved his life never knew anyone who survived what he did.”
