Long before she lit up the big screen, Salma Hayek lit up the lives of her parents.
The Frida the actress, born Salma Hayek Jiménez, was raised in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico by her father, Lebanese businessman Sami Hayek Dominiguez, and mother, Spanish opera singer Diana Jiminénz Medina.
Although she moved to Los Angeles at the age of 24 to pursue her acting career by Daily mailher family had a great influence on her life.
In 2007, Salma spoke about her mother’s craft to the OWN network. “I love my mom because she loves to sing and has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard,” she said, adding, “She sings like an angel. ”
As for her father, Salma said that he is her biggest supporter. Sami and Diana have two children. Salma was the first, arriving on September 2, 1966. She was followed by her younger brother, Sami Hayek.
“I had the privilege of growing up in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, with my parents and younger brother Sami,” said Salma. Guard 2013. “It was a close community, we lived near the ocean and we would be outside all the time with the neighbor’s kids, running freely, playing soccer in the streets and on the beach.”
The Oscar-nominated actress shared a tribute to her younger brother, a successful furniture designer, on social media in April for World Siblings Day, writing: “Sami, you’ve been a blessing in my life… although I’m sure I decorate yours with chaos .”
As a child, Salma thought her father was “the king”
Salma spoke about her upbringing in her 2015 biography Salma Hayek: Actress, director and producer by Kerrily Sapet. “I thought I was a princess,” she said in the book.
However, more than being surrounded by the finer things in life, Salma said she saw her father as royalty growing up. “I lived in a castle, and my father was a king,” she said. “I wore tiaras. I was born a giant.”
According to Daily mailsaid Salma for New York Post that Sami even allowed Salma and her brother to keep a pet tiger named Rambo in the house.

As an opera singer, Salma’s mother sang constantly. “I was embarrassed many times, but my mother taught me that whenever she sings, it doesn’t matter what others think — including me,” Across space star told OWN in 2007, “She just wanted to sing and feel free with her voice.”
The entrepreneur elaborated in a 2014 interview, saying, “My friends would come over to the house and she’d say, *she was making operatic sounds.’ And you would ask her: ‘Can I go to the cinema?’ and you would answer by singing, in front of your friends. So that was embarrassing.”
Salma said that her mom will also show her talents publicly. “Someone would ask, ‘Oh, why don’t you sing?’ … and she would just like to sing a song in a restaurant or something – but really loud. She’s an opera singer, so it’s not, like, intimate, it would be like the whole restaurant would be clapping, standing, standing ovation and stuff like that. And when you’re a teenager, that can be embarrassing. I appreciate it now, but it was embarrassing at the time.”
As an adult, activist, Salma told OWN that she sees her mom differently now. “I love her for being brave and for having such an important voice in my life,” she said.
Sami once ran for mayor
While Diana flexed her artistic muscles, Sami focused on work, working as an executive in the oil industry and later in politics. The New York Times reported on September 17, 1997 that he was running for mayor of the Mexican city where Salma was born – Coatzacoalcosa – as a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party.
Diana always knew that Salma would be successful
During the 2017 mother-daughter cover shoot, Salma and Diana worked together HELLO! NOW, Salma’s mom told the publication while she wasn’t surprised that her oldest child had turned out to be successful at her craft, she was still in awe of her. “I always knew Salmita was going to be something big in her life because of her personality, the way she always works for what she wants, but she surprises me — because Salma is unstoppable,” Diana told E! News. “She continues to surprise me more and more.”
Diana also opened up about her hopes for her daughter, saying: “There was one thing I wanted: Salma was free to grow up and do whatever she wanted.”
Sami prevented Salma from becoming an Olympian

Although today she is a successful actress and director, Salma could have had a completely different career if she had been born with someone else. “On [9]I was selected for the Olympic Games [gymnastics] team,” she revealed in a 2014 interview LIVE with Kelly and Mark. “I was so focused and so good.”
However, Olympic gold was not in the plan. “My father refused to let me go to a boarding school in another city at the age of 9, where I was supposed to practice six hours a day,” Salma reportedly said. Alright Magazine according to Olympics.com. “He said, ‘I didn’t want you to have no childhood.’ ”
Although Sami’s decision affected his relationship with his daughter at the time (“I resented my father,” she told the paper), it turned out for the best. “I’m so glad I didn’t go down that road because I really love my life,” she said.
Salma’s parents opened a music school in Mexico
Like Salma, Sami and Diana are activists working to bring the gift of music to those less fortunate than themselves. “My mother was dedicated to helping people — with my father’s money! —who had great voices but didn’t have the financial means to study music,” Salma said Guard 2013. “He and my mom shared dozens of music scholarships.”
Diana even started a music school to share her skills with the community. “My mom opened a school in the city, introduced the children to opera and designed fantastic programs,” said Salma. “With her father’s help, she brought teachers from Mexico City. They would train anyone with a good voice, and several of her students are now working as professional singers.”

Before shooting his animated film in 2014 Kahlil Gibran’s prophetSalma, whose mother is Spanish and whose father is Lebanese, made the pilgrimage with her father to her paternal grandfather’s village in Baabdat, calling the trip “an emotional journey”.
“Through this book I met my grandfather, through this book I had the opportunity to have my grandfather teach me about life,” said the Mexican-Arab actress at the film’s presentation. Reuters. “Among all the connections of our ancestors and the memories of those who are no longer with us, I hope they are proud of this film because I made it for them as well,” she said.
Salma previously spoke about her Lebanese heritage, saying Arabic news in November 2021, “I was raised and educated, as all Lebanese are educated, to give back to Lebanon, to be a brotherhood. We were brought up so that when we meet a Lebanese in our life, we immediately connect.” She added, “I probably ate Kibbeh before tacos.”
She also paid tribute to her Lebanese roots with an Instagram tribute to Sami on his 82nd birthday in November 2019. “Thank you for those Lebanese genes,” she wrote at the time.
Her family helped her overcome her phobia of marriage

Salma has been married to husband François-Henri Pinault for more than a decade, but according to the actress, her family had a hand in her walking down the aisle. Recalling her courthouse wedding in 2009, she said Glamour in February 2023. “I didn’t even know I was going to get married that day. It was like an intervention,” she joked.
The Magical Mike’s Last Dance the star continued, “[My family] he just took me to court. My parents, my brother, they all turned on me. I had a phobia of marriage.”
After realizing she “didn’t feel any different,” she said she embraced the idea of tying the knot. “A little while later I said, ‘Okay, this is kind of exciting.’ And he’s like, ‘Can we have a party now?’ ”
A few months later, in April 2009, PEOPLE confirmed that the couple celebrated a star-studded ceremony in Venice, Italy, with the bride walking down the aisle in a Balenciaga Nicolas Ghesquiere wedding dress.
In addition to guests that included Penélope Cruz, Edward Norton, Woody Harrelson, Ashley Judd and Charlize Theron, TODAY reported that Diana and her brother Sami were in attendance. “I think a wedding is love, friends, family and fun,” Salma previously told PEOPLE.
The couple renewed their vows in Bora Bora in 2018.
