Beginning with a now legendary performance in March 1958 at 92nd Street Y in New York, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater evolved. According to the company’s narrative, that performance, led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, forever changed the way people thought about American dance.
Since then, Ailey Company has performed in front of approximately 25 million viewers in 48 states and 71 nations on six continents. Millions more have now seen the company’s work online and on television. The company was named a “vital American cultural ambassador to the world” by a 2008 United States legislative resolution for celebrating the distinctiveness of the African-American cultural experience and preserving and promoting the American modern dance tradition.
Ailey drew inspiration for her dances from her “gory memories” of Texas, blues, spiritual, and gospel. This led to the development of “Revelations”, her most famous and critically acclaimed work, which is currently celebrating her 60th anniversary.
The company is now achieving Ailey’s goal by exhibiting important past work and commissioning new ones. Ailey’s company repertoire includes a total of more than 235 compositions by more than 90 choreographers.
