Aman Arora is an Indian politician and member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who was elected as the Sunam MP in 2017 and 2022. He is also the co-chairman of the Aam Aadmi Party’s Punjab unit. Previously, he was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) and ran for a parliamentary seat in South Sudan in 2007 and 2012, but failed.

Aman Arora’s father, Bhagwan Das Arora, is a politician and INC member who was elected as Sunam provincial councilor twice, in 1992 and 1997. He allegedly shot himself on the second floor on July 3, 2000. His ancestral home is located in Sunan Town, Sangrur District. Arora fell asleep at night in a happy mood, family members said. Before he got up in the morning, the servant knocked on the door repeatedly, but there was no response. So, they broke in and found Bhagwan Das dead. Meanwhile, sources close to the Arora family claimed that Arora fell into a state of severe depression due to a serious dispute over the division of family property and business.

Aman Arora was born into a family of politicians and joined politics at a very young age. He entered politics as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). In 2007, he contested as an INC candidate for the Sunam Assembly seat but lost the election to SAD candidate Parminder Singh Dhindsa. In 2012, he again contested for the South Sun Assembly seat as a Congress candidate, but lost to SAD candidate Parminder Singh Dhindsa. In January 2016, influenced by Arvind Kejriwal’s political ideology of seeking welfare for common people, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In 2017, Aman Arora won the South Assembly seat by a margin of 30,307 votes, defeating Congress candidate Jaswinder Singh Dhiman.

On May 10, 2017, Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann was appointed as the in-charge of Aam Aadmi Party’s Punjab unit and Aman Arora was chosen as the co-convenor. He held this position until March 17, 2018. A party spokesperson said Bhagwant Mann as state convener will oversee all party matters while Aman Arora will exclusively work on developing the party’s structure in the state. In 2018, Bhagwant Mann quit AAP in protest against party convener Arvind Kejriwal’s apology to SAD minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia over the defamation case Majithia filed against Kejriwal; Kejriwal accused Majithia of being involved in drug trade. At that time, Punjab opposition leaders Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Aman Arora also resigned. However, the party did not accept their resignations.

Later, Arora became the co-chairman of AAP’s Punjab unit. Arora has been appointed as the chairman of the party’s campaign committee for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. AAP Punjab president Bhagwant Mann claimed that the unanimous decision to entrust him with the responsibility was taken based on his “long experience and political acumen”. In 2022, Arora was re-elected as Sunam MLA by a margin of 75,277 votes, defeating Congress candidate Jaswinder Singh Dhiman. The Aam Aadmi Party secured 92 out of 117 seats in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections, securing an absolute majority of 79% and Bhagwant Mann was sworn in as the 17th Chief Minister of Punjab. In July 2022, Mann expanded the Council of Ministers by inducting five legislators into the cabinet, including Aman Arora from Sunam seat, Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar from Amritsar (South), Guru Har Fauja Singh Sarari and Chetan Singh Jauramajra MP from Samana and Anmol Gagan Mann MP from Kharar from Sahai seat. Arora works in the areas of information and public relations, new and renewable energy, and housing and urban development.

Family feud with Rajinder Deepa
In March 2008, Aman Arora and his brother-in-law Rajinder Deepa hit the headlines due to their family feud. Deepa accused Arora of physically attacking him. Deepa claimed that he and his wife Sonia Arora (Arman Arora’s sister) were traveling to Chandigarh for work when they received a call that Arman Arora and his goons had illegally taken possession of his house. When Deepa reached his house, Arora and others allegedly attacked him with iron rods. Sonia testified in court that she was present when Deepa was attacked. On the other hand, Arora’s mother Parmeshwari Devi accused Deepa of forcing entry into her home and misbehaving with her. She complained to the police that when her son Aman tried to save her, Deepa and his men beat him with sticks, causing him serious injuries. Thereafter, Aman and Deepa were hospitalized under police protection. The ongoing fight takes a strange turn when Deepa escapes from the hospital under police protection. Five police officers were suspended for dereliction of duty. While police were still looking to arrest Deepa, Youth Congress activists took to the streets and sat on stupas, prompting police to take action against negligent officers. Aman and Deepa had been on bad terms since his father, Congress minister Bhagwan Dass Arora, committed suicide in 2000. After Bhagwan Das’s death, his wife Parmeshwari Devi contested the 2000 Sunam by-election but lost to Parminder Dhindsa. In 2002, Bhagwan Dass’s daughter and Deepa’s wife Sonia Deepa Arora contested from the Sunam seat of Parliament but she lost to Parminder Dhindsa. At the time, Deepa accused Aman of being against his sister. In 2007, when Aman contested the South Sudan parliamentary elections on a Congress ticket, Deepa ran independently to ensure his defeat. Due to internal conflicts, the family lost three consecutive parliamentary elections for the Sunan parliamentary constituency in 2000, 2002 and 2007. In 2011, there were reports that Arora’s family had reconciled after 11 years of family feud. Apparently, Congress president Amarinder Singh played the role of mediator between them. Arora and Deepa eventually put an end to the family feud ahead of the 2012 assembly elections, with the Congress warning the family to either mend their ways or lose their franchise entirely. So they decided to support each other no matter who got the ticket. However, when Arora got a Congress ticket and Deepa failed to get a Congress ticket in 2012, Deepa gave up on the compromise. While Arora withdrew the 2008 case, Deepa continued with her private complaint filed in January 2009. In 2023, the Sangrur local court sentenced Aman Arora to two years of rigorous imprisonment in a 2008 domestic dispute case filed by Deepa. The court also sentenced eight others, including Arora’s 85-year-old mother, to two years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convicts.
