American Man, 72, Falls Overboard from Cruise Ship Ahead of Arrival in San Francisco: Reports

A 72-year-old American man was reported to have fallen overboard from a cruise ship prior to his arrival in San Francisco.

The incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, aboard the Ruby Princess as it returned from a five-day round trip to Ensenada, Mexico, Princess Cruises said in a statement to PEOPLE.

“Princess Cruises is saddened to report that a 72-year-old American man is believed to have overshot the deck on Monday prior to Ruby Princess’ arrival in San Francisco,” the cruise line said in a statement.

Kruzer also confirmed that they were “working with local authorities throughout the day” to try to locate the missing passenger.

“CCTV footage has also been extensively reviewed and the ship has been thoroughly searched several times without success.”

“Barring other possibilities, this is being treated as a man overboard incident,” the company concluded.

Princess Cruises confirmed that “the man was traveling alone”.

They added that his identity has not yet been released and expressed “sincere condolences to his family and friends”.

US Customs and Border Protection has now taken over the investigation, targeting multiple outlets.

According to ABC News, the remaining passengers from the Ruby Princess disembarked on Monday, December 1st. The ship departed that evening on a 16-day voyage to the Hawaiian Islands, the company confirmed to PEOPLE.

The outlet also reported details of the search from US Coast Guard spokeswoman Loumania Stewart. “The first crew was dispatched from Sacramento in a C-27 aircraft at approximately 3 p.m. to search an area approximately 45 miles off the coast of Monterey.”

“Another Coast Guard crew was dispatched from San Francisco by helicopter around 4 p.m.,” Stewart added.

The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to PEOPLE when contacted for additional information.
