Anil Sharma is an Indian director and producer who primarily directs Bollywood films. He is known for directing the films Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) and Apne (2007).

Anil Sharma was born on Monday, 7 March 1960, in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh (63 years old as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Pisces. He pursued his Bachelor of Science degree from Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Mumbai. Anil’s grandfather was a famous fortune teller whom he affectionately called Baba. At that time, Geeta Dutt, KN Singh, Tuntun and other movie stars followed him and often asked him for advice. In return, they often provide help (seva). When he was young, he often noticed a large crowd gathering outside his house and wondered why they were looking at the stars. Seeing these crowds whenever tourists came, he decided he wanted to work in the film industry. When he was five years old, he went to Meerut with his grandfather to attend a wedding. They live in a hotel near the cinema. Before the wedding, he asked his dad to take him there. They watched a movie called Ganga Ki Lehrein for only 10 minutes. When he grew up and went to Mumbai, he showed a producer his first script as a director and realized that the producer also made the movie Ganga Ki Lehrein. He narrated his experience in Meerut to the producers and asked about the actor who played the hero. To his surprise, he discovered that it was Dharmadhara. Therefore, Damudara was the first hero he saw in his life.

When he was 14 years old, he had memorized all the stories in the Bhagavad Gita. His grandfather often asked him to tell these stories to smart scholars, who would be moved by his stories and even cry. He can tell even complex stories effortlessly. Through these experiences, he realized he was really good at telling stories. His father moved to Mumbai, but Anil initially stayed in Mathura with his grandfather. After the death of his grandfather, Anil completed his 12th grade and at the age of 17 he went to Mumbai with his father. In an interview, he revealed that Mahatma Gandhi once came to his house during his visit to Mathura.

While studying at university, Anil was involved in drama, poetry and radio content creation. At the age of 18, he got an opportunity to join the Hindi film industry as an assistant director. He helped Indian director Baldev Raj Chopra film Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978), Burning Train (1980) and Insaf Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980) and other films.

In 2003, he directed another hit movie, Hero: A Spy Love Story, starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. The film also marks the film debut of Priyanka Chopra. The story is about spies and the tension between India and Pakistan. It was one of the most expensive films to make in Bollywood at the time and the third highest-grossing film of the year.

In 2004, he directed the film Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo, where he collaborated with Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol for the first time. The film also introduces Divya Khosla Kumar. It was recognized for its powerful patriotic message.

In 2007, the film “Apne” directed by Anil was widely praised for its presentation of family emotions and values. The film received critical acclaim and did well at the box office. Importantly, this is the first film to have all three Deols – Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.

In 2023, actress Ameesha Patel took to Twitter to claim that the production house run by Anil Sharma did not handle it well during the shooting of Gadar 2. She mentioned that people like makeup artists and costume designers who worked on the film didn’t get the money they deserved. After she spoke about the issue, Anil Sharma said in an interview that he thanked her for bringing attention to his production company and making it more famous. He said in the interview,
I don’t know why she said this. What I want to say is that all of this is fake and none of it is true. Also, I want to thank Amisha Patel. She put my studio on the map. What could be greater than this? I thank her for putting our new production company on the map. ”
A month later, Amisha said she felt she and Anil had a father-daughter bond.

- In an interview, Anil spoke about the success of the film Gadar 2 and said:
We expect Gadar 2 to be a huge hit. Lekin Yeh to gadar se bhi aage gadar ho gaya. Ek Gadar 2001 mein machi tthi. Abb ek Gadar 2023 mein machi hai. I’m not going to lie, the amount of success surprised us. On Saturday night, I went to the cinema to see my movie as an audience for the first time. I was overwhelmed by what I saw. So much love, my son Utqash is under siege. I’ve always gone to movies as a spectator. This time the experience was different. “
- Anil mentioned in an interview that Sunny Deol agreed to a lower salary while shooting for Gadar 2 because the budget of the film was not very high.
- In 1991, Anil planned to produce a film called Breakdancing, directed by and starring Javed Jafri. Despite this, the project was ultimately cancelled.
- In an interview in 2023, Anil recalled that as early as 2001, he had considered creating a film with the late actor Dilip Kumar. However, he decided to make Gadar and had to apologize to Dilip Kumar for not going ahead with the original plan.
