“It’s not a move that we wanted,” said Mayor Annette Groves to reporters on Thursday. “We have consistently held the view that the area has performed admirably. We didn’t want it, so it’s not.
The three municipalities that make up the Region of Peel will become separate, single-tier entities after the legislation that would dissolve it is passed by the Ontario government on Thursday.

There won’t be a regional administration to oversee joint services or economic expansion. Beginning in January 2025, each city will be in charge of its own administration.
Much like they had in the days before the announcement, the mayors of Mississauga and Brampton quarrelled throughout Thursday’s provincial news conference about how much money would be owing in the split. Groves took the stage after a few questions and interrupted to explain that Caledon was the “child” in this “divorce.”
We want to talk,” she declared, adding that she was sure the decision to dissolve the region had not been made hastily.
We have faith that we will be looked after during this procedure, she remarked. “I have no objections to ensuring that Caledon people will benefit from this divorce. My divorce went very well. My ex-husband comes over, lets my dog out, and takes my trash out without even needing a lawyer.

The town of Caledon, which has over 76,000 population and occupies around 56% of Peel’s area, is located north of Brampton.
“I’ll say that Caledon will be the next frontier of growth,” Groves remarked. “We are expected to take a lot of greenfield development, so we will need services, and we will need to be made whole.”

The phrase “made whole” refers to Premier Doug Ford’s pledge to make sure that municipalities don’t lose money as a result of the split. Patrick Brown, the mayor of Brampton, has reiterated this commitment as proof that his city will be compensated for funding infrastructure in other towns.
To assist in organising the region’s resources and services, a transition board will be established at some point this year. As things stand, there are still many uncertainties around how this separation will function.
