Aparna Sen is an Indian director, screenwriter and actor who works primarily in the Bengali film industry. She has won nine National Film Awards and nine International Film Festival Awards for her acting and filmmaking skills. In 1987, she was awarded the Padma Shri.

Aparna Sen was born Aparna Dasgupta on Thursday, October 25, 1945, in Kolkata, West Bengal, India (age 77; as of 2022). She attended South Point School, Kolkata and Modern Girls High School, Kolkata. Aparna spent her childhood in Kolkata and Hazaribagh (Jharkhand). She pursued her BA in English Literature from Presidency College, Kolkata.

Parents and siblings
Her father Chidananda Dasgupta was a veteran critic, film producer and one of the founders of the Calcutta Film Society in 1947 along with Satyajit Ray. Her father died on May 22, 2011, at the age of 89. In 1944, he married Supriya Dasgupta was a fashion designer. In 1995, 73-year-old Supriya Dasgupta won the National Film Award for Best Costume Design for her husband’s directorial effort “Amodini.”

Aparna Dasgupta married Sanjay Sen at a very young age, but the marriage did not last long. Later, she married science writer and journalist Mukul Sharma. However, they divorced in 1985. Mukul died on March 1, 2019.
Aparna is married to Kalyan Ray, an English writer and professor at Morris County College in Randolph, New Jersey, United States.

In 1961, 16-year-old Aparna made her debut in the Bengali film “Teen Kanya”, playing the role of Mrinmoyee.
She later acted in several Bengali films, including Aranyer Din Ratri (1970), Jana Aranya (1976), Pikoo (1980) and Antaheen (2009).

From 1986 to 2005, Aparna served as editor of Bangladeshi women’s magazine “Sananda”. She worked as Creative Director at Kolkata TV, a Bengali 24×7 infotainment channel, for a year. In 2013, the editorial team of Aparna and Paroma magazines launched a new magazine “Prothoma Ekhon”.

Sarada Group’s 2013 Financial Scandal
In 2013, a financial scandal broke out at the Saradha Group, and Paroma magazine became one of 200 private companies to fall into losses and be shut down. Aparna Sen, editor of Paroma magazine, was reportedly grilled by education board officials for more than five hours during which she was asked questions about financial transactions. The Enforcement Directorate alleged that Aparna took Rs 75 lakh as payment from Saradha. Paroma finally closed on April 14, 2013.

Letter to the Prime Minister
On July 23, 2019, some 49 celebrities from across India wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concerns about intolerance in the country. The letter claimed that the slogan “Jai Shri Ram” has become a war cry and created communal tension in the society. They also asked the Prime Minister to address the tragic incidents of killings of Dalits, Muslims and other minorities in the country. Aparna Sen joined the event but was heavily criticized for remaining silent after being grilled on live television and asked a series of questions.

Facts/Trivia
- In 1960, New Zealand photographer Brian Brake was taking a series of photos about the monsoon and the people affected by it. He captured Aparna Sen, then 14, on the terrace of her home with her eyes closed, enjoying the rain on her face. Water comes from a garden hose. Aparna’s photo was published as the cover photo of Life magazine the following year.

- Iti Mrinalini’s script has been given as an assignment for screenwriting students at Whistling Woods International, an international film school in Mumbai.
