The Google Doodle for May 22 honours the late Barbara May Cameron on the day she would have been 69. The Google Doodle depicts a caricature of the photographer with a camera hanging around her neck and brandishing a pride flag, as she first appeared in 1973. The Google Doodle highlights the temporary alterations made to Google’s logo on important occasions.
To represent other LGBTQIA+ people, a group of women is depicted behind Cameron in the image. The mountains in North Dakota, where she was born, and the cityscape of San Francisco, where she moved after finishing college, serve as the backdrop.
The gay Mexican and Chitimachan artist Sienna Gonzales collaborated on the Google Doodle with Cameron’s partner Linda Boyd-Durkee. It will debut a few days before the start of Pride Month in the US.

According to the Google Doodle, Cameron was born in Fort Yates, North Dakota, as a member of the Hunkpapa, a Native American tribe that was one of the seven council fires of the Lakota tribe. She moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, after graduating from high school to study photography.
Later, she relocated to San Francisco, where she joined a number of organisations that supported Native Americans who identify as LGBTQIA+. The Gay American Indians, the first organisation devoted to a Native American LGBTQIA+ organisation, was created in 1975 by her and her friend Randy Burns.
She then went on to co-lead a lawsuit against the Immigration and Naturalisation Service and assist in organising the Lesbian Gay Freedom Day Parade and Celebration from 1980 to 1985. The court ruled in favour of Cameron and her fellow plaintiffs in the action that challenged the government agency’s policy of barring LGBT persons from employment.
As executive director of Community United Against Violence, which, according to the organization’s website, “supports the healing and leadership of those impacted by abuse,” Cameron maintained her work as an activist during the ensuing years. In 1988, the mayor of San Francisco also appointed her to the Citizens Committee on Community Development and the San Francisco Human Rights Commission.
She also tried to raise awareness of how Native Americans were disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. Throughout the 1990s, she was an active participant in the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the American Indian AIDS Institute.
