Bhairon Singh (1941-2022) is a retired Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. It is understood that he participated in the Battle of Longewala during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. He was played by Sunil Shetty in the 1997 Hindi film Border. He died on December 19, 2022, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

Profession
In 1971, Bhairon Singh was deployed to a post in Longewala, Rajasthan, as Lance Naik. There he was attached to Delta Company, 3rd Platoon, 14th Battalion. Before the start of the Indo-Pak war in 1971, his battalion was replaced by 120 men from Alpha Company, 23rd Battalion, Punjab Regiment, commanded by Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri (later Brigadier General). Since Bhairon Singh had detailed knowledge of the area, he was ordered to remain with the Army company on patrol. On the night of December 4, 1971, Bhairon Singh’s post at Longewala was attacked by superior Pakistani forces. According to BSF official records, after a 23-man light machine gunner was killed in Punjab, Bhairon Singh took over the light machine gun and continued firing at the enemy for 6 to 7 hours, causing heavy casualties to the enemy. When one of the 23 Punjabi boys was killed, Lance Naik Bhairon Singh grabbed his light machine gun and inflicted heavy casualties on the advancing enemy. It was their courage and dogged determination that won the victory, and Lance Naik Bhairon Singh became a huge source of inspiration to his fellow soldiers on the post. “
He played a vital role in preventing the Pakistani troops from entering Rajasthan. The Longewala War ended on the morning of December 5, 1971, when the Indian Air Force (IAF) sent Hunter jets to attack Pakistani armored vehicles. Bhairon Singh continued to serve in the BSF until his retirement in 1987 with the rank of Naik.

In 1972, Bhairon Singh was awarded the Sena Medal by the Indian government for his heroic actions.

Bhairon Singh passed away on December 19, 2022, at AIIMS Hospital in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. According to his son, Bhairon was admitted to the hospital due to paralysis on December 14, 2022, and later died of a stroke. After his death, Home Minister Amit Shah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sunil Shetty and many other prominent figures expressed their condolences. After his death, his body was taken to the Subsidiary Training Center (STC) in Jodhpur, Rajasthan for a wreath-laying ceremony. He was cremated on December 20, 2022 with full military honors.
Facts/Trivia
- Bhairon Singh said in an interview that he was not satisfied with the 1997 Bollywood film “Border” because of false statements in the film. However, he said the scene in which Sunil Shetty rushed to rescue the Quran from a burning building was correct.
- Even at the age of 80, Bhairon Singh still wakes up early to practice yoga.
