Billy Joel announces the end of his residency at Madison Square Garden after 10 years: ‘It’s hard to end’

In June, it was revealed that the “Uptown Girl” singer would end her historic residency next year after her 150th lifetime performance at MSG during a press conference featuring Joel, MSG CEO James Dolan and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“I’m a little surprised it’s taken this long. My team tells me we could keep selling tickets, but 10 years, 150 shows – it’s already good!” Joel said in a statement.

Joel then recalled his first performance at MSG and called it “the highlight of my career.”

“I thought, ‘My God, I’m in charge of Madison Square Garden.’ Everyone in the world knows when you play The Garden, it’s not just New York,” he continued in a statement.

He added: “I want to thank our audience for coming to our shows for so long. It’s hard to finish, even at 150 lifetime shows. I just want to thank everyone for the wonderful thing that happened here.”

“It’s hard to believe we’ve been able to do this for 10 years. I didn’t know how long it would last,” he said. “I never imagined anyone could have a residency here. It’s just been one crazy and exciting night after another… For me, my band, MSG is more than our office. It’s home. If you Google Billy Joel’s house, they show Madison Square Garden, which is kind of cool.”

Joel made his first arena appearance on December 14, 1978, and later in 2006 set the record for the most consecutive appearances by any artist (12) (a record he has since broken). He played his 65th lifetime performance at the Garden in 2015 and set another record for “most lifetime performances by an artist” at the venue. These accomplishments have earned him MSG’s horn inscriptions, which change monthly with each performance.
