Actress and stuntwoman who starred in Purple and Black panther was hospitalized with serious injuries after an accident in New York.
Carrie Bernans, 29, was critically injured after a driver crashed into the outdoor dining area at the Chirp restaurant in Manhattan around 1:30 a.m. Monday, her rep confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement.
Bernans, who is a new mother, suffered several broken bones in the crash and is currently in stable condition in hospital, added her representative, who confirmed that her child was not present at the time of the accident.
The incident occurred amid a police pursuit after officers were notified of a physical assault involving a 44-year-old male driver of a black Mercedes and a 34-year-old female passenger in the area of 33rd Street and 6th Avenue, police confirmed to PEOPLE.

“Officers on foot attempted to defuse the situation and ordered the male operator of the vehicle to park the vehicle. The male did not comply with the officers’ commands and fled westbound on 33rd Street before turning right onto the counter at 7th Avenue to merge into traffic,” the police statement added. press release.
“The Mercedes then turned onto West 34th Street where it mounted the sidewalk and headed west. The male then struck a food cart and two 39-year-old female pedestrians, a 31-year-old female pedestrian and a 29-year-old female pedestrian.”
The incident also injured two officers, along with a passenger in the Mercedes, after the driver “repositioned the curb on the sidewalk” before hitting “two unoccupied parked vehicles and a 2022 Toyota Camry on the roadway,” police added.
“The officers were then able to remove the operator and take him into custody,” the police said.

In addition to Bernans, eight other people were injured in the incident.

The injured pedestrians were then transported to NYC Health & Hospitals/Bellevue, along with the passenger, who was listed in stable condition, according to the release. The officers were sent to a local hospital and are also in stable condition. An investigation is ongoing after the incident.
The driver is currently in Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, writes CBS News.
Bernans’ mother, Patricia Lee, vividly described her daughter’s injuries in a series of photos posted on Instagram. In one picture, her face appeared bloody and swollen with blood and bloody teeth. Another photo shows Bernans lying in a hospital bed with bloody bruises on her arms.
“She is still in a lot of pain and unable to answer calls at this time, but I appreciate the messages,” her mother wrote in the caption, “This was a traumatic incident. Please keep Carrie in your thoughts and prayers. He’s in a lot of pain, but he’s getting better.”
“It ended with her knocking her unconscious and hanging her under the stand. She was underneath that unaware of what was going on,” Lee continued about the incident.
“She has several broken bones, fractures and broken teeth, but thank God she is alive… The police soon caught and arrested him. Amidst the chaos of the New Year’s incident, she clings to an immense sense of gratitude for life itself.”

Lee added that Bernans completed the surgery and thanked first responders, strangers, family and friends who helped her after the incident.
