Hoover addressed the age differences between the characters in her romance novel and the real-life actors who played them at her Book Bonanza festival in June.

“When I wrote It ends with us, new adult (genre) was very popular. You wrote characters of student age. This is what I was contracted to do. I made Lily very young. I didn’t now, when neurosurgeons were trained for 50 years. There is no 20-something neurosurgeon,” she said, according to Today.
