Boiling Point: All you need to know about how BBC series follows on from hit film

Boiling Point was a huge success when it arrived in 2021, picking up a string of BAFTA nominations for Best British Film and Best Actor for Stephen Graham.

The film’s critical acclaim has now prompted a four-part TV series which premiered on the BBC at the weekend. The cast, including Stephen Graham, Vinette Robinson, Ray Panthaki and Hannah Walters, all reprise their roles.

But viewers might be wondering how the spin-off series leads on from the film, especially after the film’s dramatic final scenes. Here’s everything you need to know…

How did the movie Boiling Point end?

Boiling Point focuses on executive chef Andy Jones who is a master at his job at Jones & Sons restaurant. Full of adrenaline and tense moments, the entire film was shot in one take and explored the ins and outs of running a high-intensity kitchen in the heart of London.

As fans of the film will know, Andy is very successful in his job, but his mental health and general well-being suffer as a result. He struggles with alcohol and drug addiction and while dealing with a recent divorce from his wife, the high-pressure environment and his demons come to the fore after a particularly stressful night at a restaurant.

The team learns their health status has been downgraded to three stars, Andy gets a visit from his boss tense about his financial difficulties, and an engagement ensues, but suddenly all focus shifts to a poor customer with a nut allergy (who was about to get engaged) who he ends up unknowingly putting nuts in his food and an emergency occurs.

After a team meeting to determine the grievous error, Andy falls out with his colleague Freeman and comes to terms with the fact that his mismanagement is to blame for the ordeal. Andy then retreats to his office to consume alcohol and drugs. He goes to leave his office, but collapses in the final scenes of the film, leaving viewers on a cliffhanger.

Where does he download BBC’s Boiling Point from?

The four-part BBC series begins about six months after the end of the film. With Andy seemingly out of the picture (but still alive and seen in scenes himself), Carly, along with the rest of the previous kitchen team, opened her own restaurant in Dalston called Point North.

Carly wants to impress the investors and has her team working hard to prove that their restaurant is the best. But at the same time, she’s struggling with her own personal issues with her mom who, in the first episode, keeps calling her daughter with a “medical emergency,” only for Carly to leave the busy kitchen to realize there was no emergency at all.

Much like the film, the BBC show focuses on mental health as a theme, self-harm, gender identity, addiction and poverty.

Who are the new actors joining Boiling Point?

Fans will be delighted to know that familiar faces such as Vinette Robinson, Stephen Graham, Ray Panthaki, Izuka Hoyle and Hannah Walters are back to reprise their roles. But there are also some new stars joining the cast.

Joel MacCormack joined as Liam Astrid, a businessman looking to secure investment for Point North. Actor Stephen Odubola takes on the role of Johnny, a chef who has his first day in the Point North kitchen in the first episode, but initially finds the job overwhelming.

Shaun Fagan is another new face in the cast who plays Chef Bolton. Missy Haysom, meanwhile, stars as Kit, playing Kit who is part of the wait staff. Other new names joining the BBC Boiling point are: Ahmed, Malek, Steven Ogg and Cathy Tyson.
