Cumbria Police said the firearm was recovered by officers at the scene and a man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following his death.

He is still in police custody.

Local resident Frank Chalmers, 73, saw five police cars and an ambulance at the scene at around 3pm as he drove to his home in nearby Brough.

He told The Sun: “I was just driving past when I saw the police and an ambulance.

“It is the most terrible tragedy for the family and the community.”

Another witness said: “We saw two CSI men in white suits on the field, it was after 4pm.”

Someone else reported: “The CSI trail seemed to go uphill and lead left through a hedge, with stick marks.”

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: “Police are investigating the death of an eight-year-old boy.

“Emergency services were called yesterday (September 28) at around 2.50pm to a farm in the Warcop area following reports that a child had been seriously injured by a firearm on the property.

“Police and NWAS were present.

“Firearms were secured at the scene by the police, and an eight-year-old boy was taken to hospital by ambulance with serious, life-threatening head and facial injuries.

“Unfortunately, the boy died overnight.

“Officers arrested a 60-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of GBH assault.

“He remains in police custody but has now been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.”
