Brandy Clark and Brandi Carlile team up to honor American music.
Singer-songwriters were among the many lineups in September at the Americana Music Association’s 22nd annual Americana Honors, which celebrates roots music and favorite purveyors and rising stars within the genre. Ahead of the release of the televised version of the event, presented as a special sequel Austin city limits on Saturday at 8pm on PBS, PEOPLE exclusively premieres the two stars’ joint performance.
Clark, 48, and Carlile, 42, took the stage at the event held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to sing their latest collaboration, “Dear Insecurity.” Joined by pianist, percussionist and duo SistaStrings, the violinist and cellist — who were awarded Instrumentalists of the Year — played a lush, heartfelt rendition of the song from Clark’s recent self-titled album.

After the string duo and pianist set the song’s somber, reflective tone, the “Right on Time” singer sang the first verse. The “Who You Thought I Was” singer then joined in on another, and they matched the chorus — looking at each other as they delivered introspective lyrics about learning to love your imperfections.
It seemed as if the performance of the folk artists was full of warmth, as they sang with confidence to each other and brought to the audience the universal experience of occasional feelings of self-doubt.

“Maybe you could try a little kindness / Instead of hurting me / Why do you hurt me, insecurity?” hitmakers repeat all the time.
The release of Clark and Carlile’s performance of “Dear Insecurity” at the Americana Music Association event and awards comes shortly after the song received two Grammy nominations. The song received praise in the categories of best Americana performance and best American roots song, while the album on which it appears, Brandy Clarkis nominated for best Americana album.

The member of The Highwomen produced her friend and collaborator’s fourth studio album, which was released in May of this year, but only sings on “Dear Insecurity”.
