Bride Replaces Bridesmaid Just Days Before Wedding Because She Refused to Buy the Specified Dress

A bride decided to replace one of her bridesmaids just days before the wedding due to a dress dispute.

The 26-year-old bride shared her dilemma in a recent post on the popular Reddit “Am I A——?” thread, explaining that she asked all eight of her bridesmaids to buy the same burgundy mesh dress she picked out at the online retailer, complete with silver shoes.

Since the wedding was only a month away at the time, she checked on her bridesmaids to make sure they had ordered their dresses and that they would be delivered on time. One of the women – who the bride said she’s known since she was 12 – texted back, writing only: “I have a dress.”

The bride wrote in her announcement that the text of the bridesmaid’s message “disturbed” her, so at the suggestion of her matron of honor, she asked the woman to send her a picture of her dress. She did and was shocked when she wasn’t the one she chose as a bridesmaid.

“My heart literally dropped. The only thing I could do was say, ‘No, that’s not the right color,'” she recalled.

The woman then responded by texting, insisting that the bride had told her the dress had to be “burgundy and chiffon and nothing else”. However, the bride wrote on Reddit that she has screenshots proving that she sent the link to her chosen bridesmaid dress online back in December.

After the bride pointed this out, she received a series of messages from the woman in which she was sorry for “ruining and messing everything up” and that she “can’t afford a dress now”.

Despite the apologies, the bride wrote that she stops responding to her friend’s messages due to frustration. “I asked her for next to nothing for my wedding. I didn’t ask her to help me with anything or to come to any of the wedding events (dress programming, shower or outing). I only asked this one thing and she couldn’t do it” , she explained, adding, “Honestly, it just doesn’t seem like my wedding day was important to her.”

The bride then discovered that her matron of honor happened to have a burgundy dress in her closet from a previous bridesmaid that “matched perfectly” with the dress the bride had chosen for her bridesmaids. The dress fits another of the bride’s friends, who had not previously been asked to be a bridesmaid, and has now been chosen to replace the woman at the upcoming wedding.

“She’s still invited to the wedding, but she’s no longer a bridesmaid and won’t be walking down the aisle,” the bride wrote before admitting she now deeply regrets her decision. “I feel absolutely terrible and barely slept tonight, but my fiance insists I did nothing wrong. So Reddit, am I ——- here?” she ended her post, inviting people to share their thoughts on the awkward situation.

While many commentators sympathized with the woman’s concerns about whether she would be able to afford the dress, they were outraged at the way she handled the argument over the dress with the bride. “You stated the expectations and [Sam] walked around them thinking you wouldn’t notice. All she had to do was communicate and she chose not to,” one person claimed.

“That’s it,” agreed another Redditor. “If [the woman] said from the beginning that she couldn’t afford a dress, then the OP could have organized something (either helped her financially or put together a[sparedressforthematron’s).Thefactofthematteristhatthedressisexpectedtoworkeveryday-andthentherulesofthe’ohmy’bitchweredrawntothatdisrespect.”

A third person commented that the woman “absolutely should have come to you as soon as she realized she couldn’t afford the dress you asked for. She didn’t even give you a chance to work with her on this, and she was deliberately snarky when asked directly about her clothes (and deliberately tried to convince you that your were guilty of it). She had so many opportunities to solve this as an adult, and she avoided them all.”

Still, some people questioned the bride’s choice to replace her – and how the replacement bridesmaid, named Gabby, would take the move. “I couldn’t imagine being Gabby in this situation. ‘Hey, you’re not one of my eight closest friends, but you’re medium-sized, so I really want to give you a job so I have even numbers.’ ”
