British Filmmaker Terence Davies Dead at 77 

British screenwriter and film director Terence Davies has died. He was 77 years old.

Davies, who directed films including Distant voices, dead nature (1988), House of joy (2000) and Deep blue sea (2011), died at his home after a short illness, it was announced on Saturday on his social networks.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Terence Davies, who died peacefully at home after a short illness today, October 7, 2023,” the statement read.

Quotations were then distributed in memory of the late director. “Pulvis et Umbra Sumus ‘We are but dust and shadows’ (Horace),” the message continued. ” ‘And if you want, remember, and if you want, forget.’ (Christina Rossetti) Terence Davies (1945 – 2023).”

Davies was born on November 10, 1945 in Liverpool. He enrolled at the Coventry School of Drama in England with a grant from the local education authority in 1972. During his time at the school, Davies submitted his script entitled children British Film Institute (BFI) production committee and was paid £8,500 to direct what became his first short film, according to an obituary published by the BFI this weekend and shared on Davies’ Instagram Story following the announcement of his death.

Published in 1976. children described in a BFI article as offering an autobiographical look at Davies’ life growing up guilt-ridden as a young gay man at a Catholic school and dealing with his abusive, sick father, it set the tone for projects that later won BAFTA- in- nominated filmmaker.

Davies combined his early autobiographical titles Madonna and Child (1980) and Death and Transfiguration (1983), with children, to form a trilogy. He continued to make successful films Distant voices, dead nature (1988) and adaptations of classic novels, House of joy (2000), starring Laura Linney and Gillian Anderson — which earned it a BAFTA nomination for the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film, although it missed out Billy Elliot — i Deep blue sea (2011), starring Tom Hiddleston.

During his career, the director received awards and recognitions. His last movies that got attention were Quiet passion (2016), which told the story of poet Emily Dickinson (Cynthia Nixon). It was nominated for a number of awards and won three, including Best Non-US Release at the 2017 Online Film Critics Society Awards.

Davis biopic Blessing (2021), about gay British poet and World War I veteran Siegfried Sassoon, has been nominated for the 2021 British Independent Film Award.

The director talked about the inner conflict he experienced growing up as a gay Catholic, including in one of his last interviews in 2021.

“I didn’t answer myself from it, I was very zealous. From the age of 15 to 22 there were serious doubts,” Davies told The Irish Times in 2021. “I fought tooth and nail because I was taught: This is the devil’s work. I, too, once prayed until my knees bled. When I was becoming aware that I was gay, it was a criminal offense in this country.”

The director added: “He left a lot of damage. I’m still full of dos and don’ts.”

During the interview, the director reflected on his own work, talking about the comparisons he made between himself and other filmmakers and noting that he was “amazed” that there is an audience that goes to see his films.

“I watch someone else’s film and immediately feel that my films are inferior,” he told the newspaper. “I am aware of their mistakes. I mean: it had to be done. No, that shot was a little too wide. I didn’t make huge amounts of money at the box office. I’m always amazed when I get any kind of audience. Because I’ve been to places where, you know, three men have appeared.”

2022, Davies said Guard that he had “lived alone since 1980” and spoke in detail about his life and work, including praise for his own film Blessing. “I’m very proud of it, I have to say. I think it’s the best thing I’ve done. Magnificent from start to finish,” he told the outlet, which surprised his manager, who noted that it was “the first time Terence said something nice about his films.”

During the conversation, Davies discussed his “path” and described it as “a difficult path, but I have to be honest about it.”
