Carlo Bonomi, better known as the original voice of Pingu, died on August 6 at the age of 85. Italian magazine AF News reported the news, adding that he died in Milan. However, the cause of death is unclear, and no further information about his funeral has been released.
All about Carlo Bonomi
Carlo Bonomi, who was born on March 12, 1937, was best known for his vocal work in the Italian cartoon series La Linea. From 1971 to 1986, the program ran on RAI for 90 episodes and became a popular show, spawning comics, novels, short films, commercials and objects, and other homages and parodies.
In the Italian advertising program Carosello, the Milanese lent his voice to several characters. He incorporated live action, animation and puppetry into short comedy sketches. The language of noise he created and used in La Linea was reimagined in the stop-motion children’s animation Pingu. From March 1990 to April 2000, the series ran for four seasons before being renewed for two more seasons from August 2003 to March 2006. The series was nominated for a BAFTA and earned favorable reviews from critics and viewers.
Bonomi’s grammelot was meant to be a parody of the Milanese dialect, but it was influenced by three other languages frequently used by comedians in France and Italy. HIT Entertainment acquired Pingu’s rights in 2003, and Carl was replaced by the familiar voices of David Sant and Marcello Magni.

In 1985, Bonomi also provided his voice for the animated series Stripy. The following year, he recorded train announcements at Milan Central Station, which were used until 2008. He also worked on Italian radio games and provided voices for cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Fred Flinstone. In 2008, Bonomi performed his final role for the Yellow Tribe in Spore, a real-time strategy god-like life simulation game. Despite excellent reviews, the game has been criticized for its shallow gameplay and basic individual gameplay features.
Carlo retired from performing in 2008, and little information is available on his private life. His net worth is believed to be approximately $2 million and his main source of income for the past 40 years has been as a voice actor.
