Sex and the city Fans making the pilgrimage to Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic home may soon encounter a new obstacle.
On Tuesday, January 14, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a request by Barbara Lorber, owner of Perry St. 66, to install a gate blocking the steps leading to the front door of the historic brownstone building.
The building in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village was the location for Sarah Jessica Parker’s character’s Upper East Side apartment for the most part Sex and the citysix seasons on HBO, as well as in Max’s revival series, And just like that. The popularity of the beloved series has drawn many fans to the address over the past two decades.

“My home is now a global tourist destination,” Lorber wrote in her application, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.
For years, fans visiting the building hoping to get a photo have found a chain across the first step of the door with the sign “No Trespassing — Private Property,” which Lorber put up at the suggestion of her local police station. But that didn’t stop it Sex and the city diehards.
“They climb over the chain, pose, dance or lie on the steps, climb to the top to stare into the saloon windows, try to open the main front door or, when drunk late at night, ring the doorbell,” Lorber’s statement read. “We also had graffiti written on the stairs and initials carved into the frame of the main door.”

Lorber explained in her application that she “felt sorry for the young scout who recently graduated from NYU film school” when she was first asked to have her address appear on the show. “He told me he was going to lose his first real job if he didn’t insure THIS house.”
That location scout was Tyson Bidner, who is now an executive producer at FX Bear. Bidner said Gothamist that “there was probably some truth” in Lorber’s account. “I probably knew how great it was and how important it was to the show,” he said of 66 Perry St. it.”
“I feel so sorry for that lady,” Rob Striem, also ex Sex and the city location scout, he said. “I remember moaning when we had to go back to Perry Street, all the way. Like ‘Oh, who’s going to have to call that woman.’ ”
“I like what it was, and that house shouldn’t be closed,” Lorber told the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday, according to WABC. “But what was beautiful in the late 19th century, unfortunately, needs more protection in our century.”

Lorber wrote in her application that she had been waiting for 20 years Sex and the city fans to “find a new object for their devotion”.
