Carvel Is Selling Soft Serve Ice Cream for 90 Cents in Honor of Their 90th Anniversary

Home of Fudgie the Whale is celebrating its 90th birthday on Monday, August 19 (National Soft Serve Day) with 90-cent ice cream. The company began operations in the summer of 1934 after founder Tom Carvel’s ice cream truck broke down. He was forced to sell “soft melt ice cream” from a truck, according to the website, and in turn launched a new dessert category: soft serve.

Now, customers can get a small cup or cone of any soft serve flavor at a discounted price on August 19 in honor of the happy accident. There is a limit of one treat per person, and add-ons will increase the price by 90 cents.

Carvel ice cream shops have several soft serve flavors to choose from. Vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry are all classics, but some stores also offer flavors like black raspberry, chocolate hazelnut, and Carvelite versions of select flavors (a lower-calorie version). Customers who can’t wait for summer to end are in for a treat: Carvel’s pumpkin cheesecake soft serve is also arriving.

The fall-flavored treat is available earlier than last year — it will be in stores nationwide starting August 15. And it’s not just soft serve — Pumpkin Cheesecake comes as ice cream, shakes, Dashers, Flying Saucers and popsicles. But only the soft pumpkin cheesecake qualifies for the 90-cent offer on August 19.

Jimmy John’s eclipsed McDonald’s and Wendy’s Value Meals by offering their own $10 “Heavy” package

Carvel is also selling a vintage-inspired merch line in honor of the big birthday. T-shirts, coffee mugs, baby onesies and other accessories are decorated with illustrations of Carvel’s original store and logo. In addition, there are items designed with the image of the original cover of the Captain Carvel comic. All items are available online.

Wendy’s also offers dessert deals for customers. Guests can win a small Frosty for just $1 until September 15th and there is no limit.

The $1 unlimited offer applies to small chocolate and triple berry Frostys. The fruit option is still available for a while — a press release announcing the $1 offer encouraged customers to “enjoy the last days” of the triple berry flavor.
