Steve Martin Says He Won't Play VP Pick Tim Walz on SNL Despite Lorne Michaels' Offer: 'I'd Be Struggling'

Steve Martin has heard the calls, but unfortunately he won’t be carrying the stuff Saturday night live the stage.

Hours after Vice President Kamala Harris announced that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz would be her running mate in the 2024 election, the actor addressed fan pleas to play a version of Walz on Saturday night live – and join Maya Rudolph, who has already confirmed that she will reprise her role as Harris in the upcoming 50th season.

In a post on Threads, Martin, 78, wrote: “Just found out that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short.”

A joke – which was about his Just the murders in the building costar and frequent stand-up comedy partner Martin Short – delighted fans as they were quick to point out the similarities in appearance between Martin and Walz, 60, and expressed hope that Rudolph and Martin would team up on SNL as caricatures of the democratic list.

One person on Xu (formerly known as Twitter) shared a photo of the actor and Minnesota governor, writing: “So Steve Martin is definitely going to play Walz SNL Law.”

Another person wrote, “SNL call Steve Martin NOW.”

“I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no,” Martin said Los Angeles Times after finding out what Michaels called him. “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need somebody who can really hit the guy.’ I was chosen because I have gray hair and glasses.”

Noting how much of a commitment it would be to take on the role, Martin added: “It’s ongoing. It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impressionist for that. They I’ll find someone really, really good, tortured I would.”

The news comes just a week after Deadline revealed that Rudolph was confirmed to return for the late-night comedy show’s 50th season to play the former California attorney general, who she first portrayed in 2019 when Harris was running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

In an interview with the actress in 2020, Harris asked her what the “process” was like portraying her on SNLand while Rudolph called it “embarrassing,” she detailed her approach.

“As for Sen. Harris, I didn’t have an impression because I wasn’t walking around the house doing my ‘Kamala.’ But I think it starts with trying to get somebody’s vote if you can,” she said. “There’s nothing crazy overt about Senator Harris, but I have to tell you when I get there [SNL] and they put a wig on me, that’s it.”
