Career
Kathleen first appeared in the London versions of Andy Warhol’s play ‘Pork’ under the stage name Cherry Vanilla. The play was directed by Tony Ingrassia. She was involved in a number of other theater productions before joining MainMan LTD in the early 1970s as David Bowie’s publicist. During her tenure with David Bowie, Kathleen became known for her crazy marketing methods. One of the strangest things she did was to offer oral sex to any DJ playing Bowie’s music.
She was successful in her career and didn’t mind putting in extra effort to achieve it. Her relationship with David Bowie ended in 1974. She then formed her first band under her own name, followed by ‘Cherry Vanilla & her Staten Island Band’ in 1976. Members include Buddy John Vierno (bass guitar), Frank La Rocca ( drums), Thomas Morrongiello (guitar) and Gary Cohen (keyboards). The band’s debut recording was “Shake Your Ashes”, which appeared on Max’s 1976 album Kansas City.
Kathleen signed to RCA Records and the Cherry Vanilla Band was formed in London. Before the split, the band released the albums ‘Bad Girl’ and ‘Venus D’Vinyl’. Blue Roses (with Man Parrish) was her second album. In addition to her singing career, she is a well-known writer. Her autobiography, ‘Lick Me: How I Became Cherry Vanilla’, was published in October 2010 by Chicago Review Press. She also starred in many TV series and films such as Let’s Get Lost, David Bowie & the Story of Ziggy Stardust and ‘Imagine’.
