Christie Brinkley Talks ‘Accepting Certain Wrinkles’ and Gracefully Clapping Back at Online Haters (Exclusive)

Christie Brinkley is not here for negative stories.

When the supermodel posted a selfie on Instagram in June with the caption “Girl from the inner city,” she received a lot of praise — and a surprising amount of hate.

In response to the offensive comments, Brinkley updated her caption with a calm response.

Calling the commenters the “Pine Brigade,” Brinkley wrote, “It’s got to be some form of compensation for something they’re missing.” She then thanked those who chose kindness to “restore the faith” before wishing her followers a nice day.

Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of her 70th birthday on Feb. 2, Brinkley shared that she felt compelled to respond because commenters “seemed like they were going out of their way to make me feel bad.”

“I don’t think we should do that to each other,” she tells PEOPLE.

Brinkley says that when it comes to how she wants to look now, “I want to embrace certain wrinkles. It’s the way I approach aging.”

“Sometimes when people get old and overdo it, they can look waxy and – I don’t know what the word is – preserved or something. I want some life to show on my face, you know?”

Brinkley adds that injections are generally not for her. “I botoxed my forehead twice. It looked as smooth as could be, but for the first time, my brow dropped.”

Never one to get the results of the first attempt out of her head, she then decided, “I’m just going to roll with the punches when it comes to my forehead, you know?”

While she also isn’t bothered by her laugh lines, Brinkley says she gets an injection every now and then to smooth out other lines around her mouth: “But probably only once a year, as opposed to the days when I’d go in a few times a year and say, ‘Sure fix it. this or that’. ”

These days, “I’m kind of more comfortable letting it go,” Brinkley says.

With her focus on skin health, Brinkley adds that she gets Fraxel skin resurfacing treatments twice a year to help with earlier sun damage.

After years of being encouraged to tan and modeling on beaches around the world, now that she’s soaking up the sun, Brinkley makes sure her skin is protected.

On a recent trip to Parrot Cay, she said, “I slathered on sunscreen religiously while I was there, and I wore a shirt and a wide-brimmed hat. I can’t express enough how much better my skin felt when I got home this time than any other time I’ve been back. Normally, even though I’d try to protect myself from the sun, I’d feel like an old piece of pirate shoe leather.”

Brinkley wants to “feel the best I can on my big 7-0” — and says the process is more than profound.

The decades-long vegetarian remains committed to plant-based meals (she’s currently loving Sakara’s delivery program) and is an ambassador for RYZE adaptogenic mushrooms, which are said to reduce the effects of stress on the body. “I put it in my coffee in the morning,” she says.

“It’s so good. And the way I use it is I make my cup of coffee, and then I put a big heaping spoonful of RYZE in it, and then I put in oat milk, and my coffee is like this powerhouse in the morning.”

She’s also a fan of his matcha tea powder, which he combines with almond milk, as well as his recently launched Melatonin Hot Chocolate and Oatmeal Oatmeal. “Before you go to bed, simply put whatever you want to mix the oats with. I like to use oat milk and nuts so I get a little more protein. And then you just put it in a jar and shake it.”

Brinkley, who has always incorporated exercise into her routine, says she likes to start her day moving.

“When I’m in a place where I can get on the bike and just go for a long ride, I like to do that, but I also like to jump on Peloton or take some kind of spin class. A few days a week I do a 20 or 30 minute class and then I’ll do some of the floor, arm and muscle exercises [the other days]. I really love my Total Gym because it’s my home equipment and for me I feel like if it’s in my home I’ll do it.”

“These are all things I’m doing to start 2024 and my new decade, really, boom!”
