Christina Ricci’s life has evolved, both professionally and personally, including becoming a mother to her two children: Freddie and Cleopatra.
The Yellow vests the star welcomed a son in 2014 with her ex-husband, camera and lighting technician James Heerdegen. The actress remarried in October 2021 to hairdresser Mark Hampton, and two months later she gave birth to their daughter.
Before a January 2017 interview with PEOPLE, Ricci credited marriage and motherhood.
“I didn’t realize how much growing I had to do and how much better I could be. And my marriage and my child really made me better,” she said.
Ricci continued, adding that her priority was spending time with her son when she wasn’t working: “I’m usually with my son when I’m free. When I’m not working, I try to be with him as much as I can. Taking him to playdates and kindergarten.”

A few months later, in March 2017, Ricci opened for Editing and reflected on how being a wife and mother affected her as an individual.
“Marriage shows you your flaws in how you deal with things, and having a child makes you grow up at the speed of light,” she told Net-a-Porter’s digital magazine. “I’m a completely different person than I was before I had a baby.”

Ricci and Heerdegen welcomed their first and only child together, son Freddie, in August 2014.
The Addams Family star told PEOPLE in March 2016 that her son “changed everything.”
She explained: “It made everything in my life really important and essential. Now I have to take things seriously, and I never did before. I want to succeed for him. My choices are more important.”
Before the birth of her daughter years later, Ricci rarely shared photos of her son on social media. However, she has documented several mother-son trips together in recent years, including a trip to Disneyland for Spring Break in March 2023.
Three months later, she also shared pictures from the duo’s trip to New York, including a photo of Freddie riding the subway and another photo of the two of them posing in front of the Statue of Liberty.
Ricci, who was only 9 years old when she made her film debut sirens alongside Cher and Winona Ryder, she began explaining her acting career to her son when he was young.
In July 2018, she told PEOPLE how Freddie came home from daycare when he was about 3 years old and asked: “Mom, are you a movie actress?” ”
“I didn’t tell him that. People mention it to him… Then I have to explain to him what it is, and we showed him the films,” she said.

At first, though, he wasn’t interested in watching movies where Ricci didn’t look like himself, so he started making demands. “We showed him Casper and then we realized he hadn’t developed that ability to tell reality from fiction,” she explained.
As Freddie grew older, he continued to support his mother’s career. In September 2022, he and his younger sister celebrated their mom’s Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. (Julia Garner won.)
After the event, Ricci shared a photo of the brother-sister duo sitting under a banner that read “Congratulations to the best mom” on her Instagram stories.
She also spoke openly about how she raises her children and the values she instills in them. During the interview with in December 2022 The GuardianRicci said Freddie “will not be able to avoid” being progressive.
“My husband, Mark, I hate to say that because it sounds really gross, feminist,” she said. “And Freddie will see it, and see his busy mother. I think he’s going to see women in a much more layered, complicated way, just because he grew up watching his mom do all those things.”
About whether her son will follow in her footsteps as a child actor, she told New York Post in February 2019 that it is unlikely.
“Once he becomes an adult, once he studies and realizes that it’s an art form, then he can pursue an acting career if he wants to,” she told the newspaper.

The actress initially announced her pregnancy on social media, sharing a photo of the ultrasound image with the caption, “Life is getting better.”
In the months that followed, Ricci showed off her baby bump on several occasions, including on the red carpet alongside Hampton at the film’s Los Angeles premiere. Yellow vests and in the campaign for Marc Jacobs.
Cleopatra was not originally intended to be the full name of Ricci’s daughter. During the interview at The Ellen DeGeneres Showthe actress revealed that before she gave birth via C-section, she and Hampton had agreed to name their daughter Cleo.
“My husband said, ‘Well, we’re going to give her a full name, right? And the nickname is Cleo?’ And I said, ‘Cleopatra?’ ” she told host Ellen DeGeneres “And he said, ‘Yeah, her full name is Cleopatra.’ And I said, ‘Okay, whatever, we’ll talk about it later.’ ”
Ricci added: “He was so excited he put it on Instagram and the media found out that her name was Cleopatra Ricci Hampton and I was like, ‘Oh, I guess her name is Cleopatra.’ ”

When Cleopatra was a child, Ricci had it easier in certain respects than when Freddie was a baby. Speaking to PEOPLE in September 2022, the actress called her then-9-month-old daughter a “miracle” for being sleep trained.
“The fact that I can put her down in her crib and she just goes to sleep while my eight-year-old is still sleeping with me is amazing,” Ricci said.
However, when Cleopatra was teething, it was a different story. She said Party tonight Canada in July 2022 that she didn’t find out about her Emmy nomination for the Showtime series until much later because her daughter was “teething really hard all night,” which was keeping her from sleeping.
“I actually didn’t fall asleep until 5 in the morning,” Ricci recalled. “I fell asleep and my husband tried to wake me up at 8:40 to let me know I was nominated, but I decided to stay asleep and then he woke up later to like crazy amounts of texts and calls.”
Ricci and Hampton have shared some adorable moments of their daughter on social media since she was born, like a hilarious post of a hairdresser testing out silly Instagram filters.
The actress also posted a cute snap of her mini me to mark her first birthday. Ricci called Cleopatra his “little dream baby,” writing, “She’s a gift from the universe. She opened our hearts wide again.”
