Despite the shocking death of John Dutton, Kevin Costner’s character in season 5, the second part of the premiere YellowstoneCole Hauser says his character Rip Wheeler remains adamant about fulfilling the late Montana governor’s wishes for his family’s sprawling ranch.
Hauser, 49, tells PEOPLE that Rip, who is Dutton’s son-in-law, will continue to be “100% there” for wife Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) “and the family” during the remaining episodes of the show as they continue to try to “figure out the best way forward.” .
“It’s what John Dutton would have wanted. It’s what he’s been taught his whole life,” Hauser tells PEOPLE while catching up on his new collection with Lucky Brand.

Return from Yellowstone after nearly two years since the midseason finale, it saw Hauser’s character thrown directly into the middle of turmoil that threatens to undermine the very way of life he and the Dutton family fought tooth and nail to maintain.
Between the murder of Dutton, the death of longtime rancher Colby Mayfield (Denim Richards), Rip’s move to Texas to help his fellow ranchers (and fend off a snake attack), and the future of the ranch hanging in the balance, Hauser’s character certainly has his hands full this season.

Despite this heavy burden of personal conflict, Hauser claims his character is “as rooted as the mountains around him” and won’t let his resolve waver in such an uncertain time for the Dutton family.

While the actor admits that “s— is happening” in terms of Dutton’s death, he claims that “you have to move on” for the sake of the story.
“So that’s how I feel,” he adds.
Hauser previously told PEOPLE in April that “what he does [Wheeler] It is special that he also has an incredible heart. I mean, his loyalty is not only to the Dutton family… but also to Beth and his kindness. Except sometimes I want to kill people… for me it’s the best of both worlds to be able to play.”
In his recent interview about his Lucky Brand collection, Hauser used his decades of experience on the field (and in the saddle) to inspire all of his “Americana” designs.
“I wear jeans nine months of the year,” he says. “I wear cowboy boots nine months out of the year. And for me… designing with Lucky was trying to find a way to make them more comfortable,” he says of the collection, which is available for purchase now.
