The actress went offline a few days after the event, and has not been online for three years. She ended up talking about how the criticism took an emotional toll on her, leading to a suicide attempt. During this period, she also worked on the book Making a Scene, which she just promoted in a tweet. The book talks about how to treat yourself when you are in psychological distress and how to deal with trauma.

On Thursday, July 14, the Crazy Rich Asians actress sent out a lengthy tweet addressing the online abuse she suffered in 2019. She began by telling people that she had been gone for over three years and was hesitant to return to social media because of her past experience. . She said she was scared but was trying to get back on the platform. She also promoted her book, writing:
“I wrote the book Making a Scene while I was away.”
After making a “careless” statement about continuing her program Fresh Off the Boat, she revealed how dire her position was in 2019. The actress said the anger over the remark affected her so much that she attempted suicide. Constance Wu explained on her blog:
“Three years ago, when I posted irresponsible tweets regarding the renewal of my TV program, it caused controversy and severe online shaming.” I felt terrible about what I said, and when a fellow Asian actor told me that I had become a plague on the Asian-American community, I felt like I didn’t deserve to live.”
She wrote:
“I was a disgrace to the AsAms and they would be better off without me.” In retrospect, it’s bizarre that several DMs talked me into committing.”
Fortunately, one of her friends discovered her and brought her to the hospital. Constance Wu decided to take a break from work and social media after the event to focus on her mental health. Se went on to say that Asian cultures don’t discuss mental health as much as they should. She continued, saying:
“AsAms don’t discuss mental health enough. Although we are eager to celebrate national team victories, there is a lot of avoidance of heavier topics in our community.”
She further said that the incident caused other Asian Americans in the sector to “avoid” her, which “hurt a lot”. However, the experience gave her a better understanding of mental health issues and helped her realize “how important it is to reach out and care for others who are going through a difficult time.”
She revealed why she wrote her book in the first place. She hopes her book will help readers “reach out and talk about uncomfortable issues” as they go through a difficult time. She wrote:
“So while my book is not necessarily the most favorable representation of myself, it is as honest as I can be.”
