Daisy Ridley Explains How Penélope Cruz Helped Her Fall in Love with Husband Tom Bateman: "We've Been Together Ever Since"

Daisy Ridley talks about how Penélope Cruz played an important role in starting her relationship with husband Tom Bateman.

Ridley, 32, appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show on Tuesday, October 29, to promote her new film Magpiewhere host Drew Barrymore asked Star Wars the actress details how she met Bateman (35) on the set of their film in 2017. Murder on the Orient Express.

“We’re an acting cliché,” joked Ridley. – We got along right away and we were like best, best, best friends – she said with a laugh, after Barrymore asked if sparks flew immediately. “But I didn’t look at it that way until someone fantastic in our film said something that made me look at it [him differently] — Penelope Cruz. And I said, ‘Huh,’ and yes.”

“And did she say it the way Penélope Cruz would?” Barrymore asked.

“I mean, imagine. Penelope says anything, and you say ‘Yes,’ and that was it,” Ridley replied. “We’ve been together ever since, yes.”

Ridley and Bateman starred alongside Cruz, 50, and a host of other stars — including Kenneth Branagh, Willem Dafoe, Johnny Depp and Judi Dench — in Murder on the Orient Expressthe first of three Branagh murder mysteries adapted from Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels.

The couple usually keep their love life private; Ridley only confirmed that they were married in a January 2023 interview Rolling Stoneafter years of speculation that she and Bateman were engaged.

Now, the couple is promoting their new film together; Ridley came up with the original idea for Magpie and Bateman wrote its screenplay, and both actors also worked on the film as producers.

The new film follows Ridley’s character, Annette, as her marriage begins to fall apart when her daughter is cast in a film — and her husband Ben (Shazad Latif) becomes infatuated with their daughter’s on-screen mother.

“It’s funny because people tell me and Tom we’re the happiest married people they know,” Ridley recently told PEOPLE while discussing the film, which also stars Pippa Bennett-Warner, Hiba Ahmed, Cherrelle Skeete and Alistair Petrie.
